Lincoln did things during war that weren’t terribly constitutional but that is something that pretty much all war presidents do. I would be surprised if Jefferson Davis didn’t step over that line on a few occasions as well.
In any case both men had their strong points and weak points. I try to honor them both.
Jeff Davis's regime was much more oppressive and bloody than Lincoln. If opponents of the Union in the North were sometimes in danger of jail, opponents of the Confederacy in the South often were in danger of their lives. Some locales under Confederate control could be described as being under a reign of terror.
