Not without having received the greatest number of votes for President they couldn't. True, but also not without being a Natural Born Citizen. The Constitution sets out many requirements. All must be met.

And those involved in the political process obviously felt that they were met. Not one elector withheld a vote nor did a single person in Congress raise any issue when the votes were counted and certified.
