Doug Hoffman pledged to help Dede Scozzafava in an e-mail sent two days after the Republican Party passed over the Lake Placid accountant for the nomination.
The e-mail, sent from Mr. Hoffman's business account on July 24 and provided by the Scozzafava campaign, states in full: "Hi Dede, Congratulations and the best of luck in your candidacy. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. Doug."
This is contrary to what Mr. Hoffman, who is now running against Ms. Scozzafava as a Conservative candidate, told me less than two weeks later.

By electing Owens?
That is nothing more than a courteous letter by a gracious opponent. To call that a "pledge" is nonsense. You might as well claim that by signing a letter "very truly yours" you have pledged yourself to marry the recipient.
You fell for it hook, line and sinker.
Exactly, AnAmericanMother.
Why are you posting such crap here, Mojave? Sheesh...
Yet another reference to the invisible pledge.
Nope. Just exposing a 3 rat race.
By running against two liberals.
They just happen to be the ones who control it.
Do you know what the supposed pledge said or are you just going with a general comment. Without the specifics of the pledge you do not know that he broke it or that he even made it.
The harsh reality of winning this war is that it takes all gradations of conservatism to make a working majority. (And I am excluding Scuzzbucket because she possesses no grade of conservatism.)
It then becomes the job of the Whip to get the votes. The Republicans can't even participate without the majority. That's what Newt knows and I'm sure that's why he supported her. I'm also sure he wishes he could take it back.
So they're backing your gal Scuzzy. So, this race is effectively Scuzzy against Hoffman. Owens is irrelevant.
From Mr. Leahy's article
then let the party chairmen convene and select the nominee, based on a majority vote. Each county chairman received a weighted vote based on the percentage of the districts Republicans who resided in their district.
....But when Duprey arrived at the decisive meeting of county chairmen held in Potsdam the next week, she ignored the wishes of her fellow Clinton County Republicans and cast the deciding vote of the second ballot in favor of Scozzafava, her friend and colleague in the Assembly.
Well and good until Duprey decided to ignore the majority wishes of the Republican Central Committee in Jefferson County.
How dare he!
hmmm....
Smells like the typical RINO bullsh— we have been fed for decades.
Sorry, enjoy your lovely party gift. Dont let the door hit ya on the way out. mmmmkay? byebye now...
He was fine with her being a liberal for years. What a convenient change of heart.
“Despite having signed a pledge to support the eventual nominee to emerge from the process, Hoffman considered the possibility of asking for the Conservative Party’s endorsement to run against Scozzafavva, making it a three way race.”

GOP leaders were outraged, especially since Mr. Hoffman, like other congressional hopefuls, had pledged to support the nominee. He did say it repeatedly, said Sandra Corey, the former GOP chairwoman of Jefferson County. And then all of a sudden, its a no-go, like he hadnt understood her background, which is a falsehood. I would never, ever trust him.

BTW, I concur with your point (though unpopular on FR): "The harsh reality of winning this war is that it takes all gradations of conservatism to make a working majority." Depends on the district/state/candidate, etc.
Go to hell jerk!
Duprey voted for Paul Maroun on the 1st ballot. 2nd ballots are designed to break stalemates.
