from Fred’s link:

“After Independence, they bought a 750-acre dairy farm at Naro Moru, the same farm where Born Free, the famous film about George and Joy Adamson and their lioness, Elsa, was shot.”

BORN FREE was a book I read as a youth... iirc Afrikan,or African referred to the native, negroid person in opposed to the Europeans. Was it a common word to denote race?

Any one have the book? Can’t find mine.

seems that way. There were people of 'african' stock, people of european...and then there were/are lots of Indians and Asians...

Fred links a lot, so I’m unsure which one you refer to.

Born Free: back then there were four official races: white, black, indian, and coloured.

I have no idea what the author of that book used. The above words are descriptive and do not necessarily imply any type of derogatory connotation.

The entire continent is tribally divided and most self identify as Zulu, Shangaan, Tswana, Venda, Shangaan, Tswana, Venda, Podu, etc. In writing , people are often referred to tribally because of these distinctions.
