Ibuprophin does reduce swelling and subsequently reduces pain. I am delaying a possible knee replacement by taking it. However my physician frowns on it as it works against high blood pressure medication. I use it as sparingly as possible.

Thanks for all your good investigative work. Hope the Globe article will convince some people who never follow the news.

Sorry for the delay in answering. I couldn’t get into FR. Probably a Panamanian thing.

Yes. Ibuprophin reduces swelling and therefore the pain.

Sorry, I don’t know anything about Aleve although I am familiar with the name.

A couple of years ago I went limping with one my kitties to the vets. I could hardly drive. The vet told me to buy Ibuprophin. He said to take one now and another in 8 hours. Period. Driving back home, I noticed a great difference.

Since I always seem to be hurting myself, I always keep some on hand.

Will Ibuprophin reduce swelling?

Yes, but how well depends on the source of the swelling. Given that it's your ankles, a diuretic (water pill), such as hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) or Chlorthalidone might work better. Those are both prescription only, but are available as generics and are dirt cheap, I think they are on the $4 list at WalMart and Walgreens. You have to watch for loss of potassium and magnesium though, which could cause leg cramps (and that's just the milder things low levels can do.)

How about ALEVE?

Same answer. Alieve, which is naproxen sodium, is also a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, which most people find upsets their stomach less. It's often prescribed for arthritis
