If you must have a handgun, there’s lots to choose from:
glock
springfield
beretta
Sig and H&K are fairly popular too but I don’t care for them. Well, I like sig alot, just not at the price they want for them.
My first choice for a brand new pistol would be a beretta Px4 storm. Springfield has the new XDm...don’t know much about them though. Ruger makes pretty good pistols too.

I recently purchased a reconditioned sig for under 300 dollars, two clips a holster, etc.
It was a german police force weapon. They buy them back when new are purchased. I figured a cop takes care of it. Other than qualification how much does a cop shoot. they'e taken back to he factory armors and gone over. i have 500 plus rounds thru it and not one blip in its performance.I bought mine for protection when I'm ice fishing, somewtimes 15 miles out on a frozen lake in indian territory if you know what i mean. I,ve learnd to be prepared there is always that 1%. It rides in the bottom of my portable behind my snowmobile. Frozen and stiff I've pulled it out a killed lb. propane cylinders with never a problem.
For the home, i,d go with remington 870 and 00 buck
