Patton knew the truth too.

We won World War II...but then we gave something of upwards of 200 million people over to a tyrant who was just as bad as Hitler, if not worse...and fought a 45 year cold war to contain that monster, which led to two hot wars and well over 100,000 American deaths

What happened to Mihailovic is a tragic and disgusting part of the victory we won. I was able to visit Romania in the 1990s as an engineering consultant and in the city I was in there lived an older gentelman who was part of the resistance in World War II.

He was a stately man, well known and respected there, a large man, probablky 6'3". He asked some people to bring me to visit him and I conceded and did so one day after work. I was one of the first Americans he had known of who visited that city after the fall of the Communists.

When I came there they had prepared a snack with pastries. A translator communicated between us.

He said he had only one question and had waited years to ask it..."Why. Why did the United States and the Allies abandon us tio the Communists?"

That was it. I told him I was not born at that time but through my parents, my Dad a combat World War II vet himself, I could tell him only that many Americans did not agree with it. That many Americans did not hold Roosevelt in very high regard, that in many opinions he himself was far too friendly and accomodating to that madman Stalin.

But the direct enemies of Germany and Japan had been defeated and the boys were coming home so despite the misgivings...and because we did not have to live with the consequences like he and his people did...the war ended, lands were divided up, and the American soldiers came home.

He thanked me and we chatted for a few minutes...but he had asked what he wanted to ask, what he had waited to ask. I am not sure the answer was satifying to him, but it was the truth as far as I knew.

Such are the blessings of victory, and the costs of befriending tyrants like Stalin to defeat ones like Hitler. Ultimately we had to face Stalin and his followrs and we did...and we had to have a Reagan to finish it.

History, as this aricle states, in a future further removed by several generations may reveal all the hidden costs of that time. As it is, CHurchill did preserve England, and America helped the world defeat the Fascists and IMperialists.
