Only months after a new state law effectively banned "mom" and "dad" from California schools, a total of 600,000 students could follow because of what has been described as the "repudiation" of 2,000 years of Christian morality, according to leaders of a new campaign assembling education alternatives.
The campaign is called California Exodus, and is being headed by Ron Gleason, pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church in Yorba Linda, who said while the country excels in social, economic, scientific and political accomplishments, it "gets low grades on the education of its children."
The issue is the state legislature's adoption of Senate Bill 777, which requires only positive portrayals of homosexual, bisexual, transgender and other alternative lifestyle choices.
"First, the law allowed public schools to voluntarily promote homosexuality, bisexuality, and transsexuality. Then, the law required public schools to accept homosexual, bisexual, and transsexual teachers as role models for impressionable children. Now, the law has been changed to effectively require the positive portrayal of homosexuality, bisexuality, and transsexuality to six million children in California government-controlled schools," said Randy Thomasson, chief of the Campaign for Children and Families and one of those who originally called for an abandonment of public schools.
"To rescue their children, loving parents need to find an alternative to government schools, and every church needs to make it a priority to help parents be in charge of their children's education again," he said.
He has condemned public school districts as "no longer a safe emotional environment for children" under the new law, signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, that will introduce children as young as kindergarten to the homosexuality and other alternative lifestyle choices.

Last fall, the SBC did a do-over (I think they were embarrassed by having publicly stated that they lost so many) and found that about 70% leave but that about 2/3rds return “at some level”. At face value, this is not at all good. “At some level” includes people who show up at Christmas and Easter only. A large percentage of those who returned came back for cultural reasons only (”Well, we have children now and we thought it would be a good idea....”).

On the other hand, I am reasonably sure they are getting back substantially fewer than the 2/3 return rate they claim. Bear in mind, however, that Moore was simply citing the SBC’s own alleged findings.
The discussion of how many children leave church is a misplaced concern (unless you are a pastor concerned about cashflow). What matters is not how many posteriors are in pews, but what the people professing to be Christian believe and do. There the news is far worse and relatively incontrovertible. Christian Smith’s “Soul Searching” (Oxford University Press) is a damning indictment of the church’s performance. Those findings are also very similar to those of Barna Research. Fewer than 20% of young people professing to be Christians really are. Public schools and the media, on the other hand, have been very effective in their evangelization of children out of Christianity. Sissy pastors and materialistic parents have provided the schools and media with an able assist.

Do you have any basis for claiming the data were “massaged” by Shortt (or Moore, for that matter)? And how would they “massage” it when they had no hand in producing it? It’s happening now in our local public school district and some of us have been fighting it. I don’t have children in the public elementary/middle school but I’m still fighting it. I’m a taxpayer and it’s my right. I have kids in the public high school and don’t really care about the propaganda being shoved down their throats because they’re old enough to know better and they do know better.
I taught public high school and now sub teach in public school,both elementary/middle and high school. It’s amazing what is being taught to these kids. Socialism is revered. And the masses are clueless.

Every Christian employee of the California public schools must understand that the new school legislation requires all school employees, and particularly teachers an administrators, to collaborate in the spiritual and psychological molestation of children mandated by SB 777 and related legislation. When I do, hit the abuse button. My opinion remains the same, government schools are organized child abuse. Wake up before it is too late.
As long as my taxes are paying for it and as long as children are being subjected to the liberal agenda, I will continue to fight it. I’m sure not much will be done given our stupid masses but I won’t stop fighting.
There will be no shutting down of public schools, surely you must know that? A huge portion of our society won’t allow it and a huge portion would suffer even moreso from any shutting down. These parents won’t educate their kids even if they didn’t have a public/free school to send them to. If our taxes are paying to keep these schools running then we have a duty to make sure they’re run correctly, imo.
I didn’t and won’t home school my kids. That’s fine for some, and I give them credit, but I won’t do it and I have a degree, a few degrees. Of course, if I had to, I would. I happen to think my teaching them all these content areas wouldn’t benefit them. My children didn’t attend and don’t attend public school in the elementary and middle school years. I sent them to catholic/private school, as was my choice, for a reason and fortunately we were able to afford it. And I send them to public high school, as is my choice and my taxes are paying for it.
I do agree with you that the public school system is and has been for decades, a couldren (sp) for every liberal idea. However, if we teach our children, if parents parent their children, the school system will have a minimal negative impact on them. I see it with my own kids, even the ones in catholic school. It’s all about personal responsibility and accountability imo and unfortunately, the masses don’t have that.
Sure, I could have home schooled my kids until I had to get a job to help our family. And I chose not to and I chose to pay for catholic/private schooling.
The bottom line, for me anyway, is as long as my taxes are supporting education, then I have a say/voice in what’s going on and I will continue to fight what’s going on. Public education is a liberal stronghold. But it’s not going away unless every single citizen no longer sends their kids to public school - and that’s unrealistic imo. Just like overturning Roe v Wade is unrealistic imo. Yet I will fight to stop tax payer funded abortion and the whole idea that abortion is a choice and not murder.

I came into the thead late and I haven’t read all theposts. I think we posted to each other awhile ago (maybe not).
I have many issues with public education, hell, all education. But I was a high school (public school) teacher and now sub teach at all levels. I have huge issues with the NEA, AFT, teacher unions and hate that teachers are unionized. I live in the NE and I’m starting to learn/think that the public ed system here is different than other regions.
Saying it again. WHY was I pinged to this?
If you really want me to weigh in, I will. I can tell you though, it’s not going to look flattering on you when I say what I think.
