In order to have carnage don't you need dead people? Sherman may have burned anything that supported the confederate war effort but your implication that he went around slaughtering anyone who moved is ridiculous. I'd like to know just how many civilians you think he killed?

I just got through reading some about Sherman. He disliked war in general and wanted to put a quick end to it. He ordered all civilians evacuated before torching Atlanta. He ordered his men to leave rations for the household, and not to use abusive language when they were commandeering food on their march. (though that didn’t apply in areas where there was armed resistance). He was admired by Confederate generals Lee and Johnston, and Johnston was a pallbearer at Sherman’s funeral.

"sherman, the destroyer" probably killed nobody, personally.

what he SHOULD have been hanged for was "suffered troops under his command" to commit mass rapes, tortures, assaults, robberies, arson & MURDERS of countless civilians. in other words, sherman failed to END the commission of WAR CRIMES & CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY, while the commanding general of those troops.

fwiw, that's what "general yamashita" was hanged for. sherman deserved a short rope & a long fall, TOO.
