The same way HP got it in CoS is the thinking on the thread--through the Sorting Hat. The hat was a relic of Gryffindor's as well. I guess maybe it can summon the sword to it whenever there is need.
Maybe the hat is a Horcrux of Gryffindor's. Now we can speculate whatever we want and never be proven wrong--how liberating!
