SOFIA, Bulgaria President Bush braced for problems at home Monday with the cheers from his European trip still ringing in his ears.
He pledged to resurrect his derailed immigration bill in the Senate "I'll see you at the bill signing," he declared and dismissed Democrats' effort to hold a no-confidence vote on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales as a waste of time.
"I'll make the determination if I think he's effective or not," Bush said of Gonzales, a member of his inner circle from Texas.
Returning to Washington Monday night, Bush said he would be on Capitol Hill on Tuesday to lobby Republican senators to support a plan that would give up to 12 million illegal immigrants a pathway to legal status.
En route aboard Air Force One, he phoned three senators to discuss how it could be revived: Sens. Ken Salazar, D-Colo.; Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., and Edward Kennedy, D-Mass.
"He thanked all of them for their leadership and their hard work. He underscored his commitment to getting the bill done soon," said deputy White House press secretary Dana Perino.
"I believe we can get it done," the president said before he left Bulgaria.

Too bad he couldn't have put this much energy into marshalling senators to something else, like SUPPORTING OUR TROOPS!!!!!
I can understand the concerns about immigration. but what’s wrong with the President trying to bring both the far right and left together?
Even his own State Party of Texas was happy to see this bill killed.
I don't see him having the ability to twist any GOP arms to walk the plank on this issue.
Moreover, it still has to go to the House, and they all have to face reelection next year.
Bush sold his soul for a mess of pottage.
With this group? You have GOT to be kidding. Don’t even bother to respond.
I believe President Bush is a good guy. He truly wants to help these people. He would give them the shirt off his back
But George: It aint your shirt Hoss.
It belongs to us. The American people, and we have told you over and over we arent ready to go shirtless.
We are not ready to call these unwanted visitors Americans when they have snuck into our country ilegally. We damned sure dont want more on Z-visa’s, and we arent responsible for paying their health care and breeding expenses.
Now for those Senators who are thinking of changing their vote remember this. Brother george cant run again. He is out in two years and back to his ranch. Now: If you have a ranch and want out in two years you go ahead and listen to the President. If you want to come back for more graft. more junkets, more freebies, I advise you to listen to America.
We dont need 20 billion new citizens,we dont need to pay their welfare, we dont need them helping destroy Social Security, we dont need them driving drunk on our highways,we dont need them breeding anchor babies,we dont need them lowering wages for real Americans, we dont need them sending more money back to Mexico.
We do need immigration legislation, but we dont need to give up our sovereignty to get it,nor do we need to spend 3 trillion dollars for it.
I can understand the concerns about immigration. but whats wrong with the President trying to bring both the far right and left together?
I’m hoping your question is a joke !!!
It’s like seeing Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde. What is wrong with him and these Senators. I feel like they all wanted the Democrats in office so they could do this.
I feel so betrayed.
Care to qualify what you mean by this, in particular “this group”?
Because if you (mistakenly IMO) think the bill is a convergence of the far left with the far right, you do know what that means?
Yeah, but the poster complained about "this group" in general even with Kyl there.
But Kyl is a logical choice to have helping to work the bill.
He's from AZ and for years has been the one conservatives leaned on for immigration issue. Of course President Bush should have him there.
Maybe, but just because there's meetings between the far left and far right on this bill doesn't necessarily imply smoke-screen.
Or do you really expect the 2 factions to never meet together?
Just say NO to Amnesty!! Keep calling!! Its NOT OVER!!
