The Confederate Constitution specifically outlawed the continuation of the African slave trade. The South knew that slavery was a dying institution. The issue of slave and “free” states was actually a matter of two regions of the country wrestling for political clout and control.

You can’t reduce the whole North-South issue to “slavery”, either in the 1860s, or in the year 2007. Just look at the red-blue political map.
