"He would have to be the best salesman in the world to convince the Religious Right that he is on their side. He's just not. These are not some stupid uninformed voters, they are a very powerful arm of the GOP, who stand on principles. They will never sell out those principles of pro-life, pro-gun and anti-homosexual agenda."
That is a good point, but there is even more to it than that.
The issues you list ( Pro-life-Guns-Gays ) are the issues of the "single issue" voters. They may not be very active in politics and may not even vote in the primaries, but they WILL vote in the Nov election and base it on the mailers they get from the groups that support those issues.
The GOA already has a huge page of write-ups slamming McCain,
and others running can expect the same ( or much worse).
IMHO...The independents and swing voters make up a large % of the "single issue voter" block. They may lean more Democrat on other issues, but they swing based on those.
The unions have lots of them that will vote Republican based only on the gun issue.
With how close the POTUS elections have been lately, can we afford to lose any of those voters?

You are absolutely correct. The GOP cannot afford to lose ANY element of the party, and based on 2006, they better find some more!

I like how Rudy would matchup with either Obama or Hillary. I can't see either 'rat candidate winning any significant Southern support, although the margins won't be as large as with GWB. Rudy would have a very good chance of winning NY, and that alone would be tough for the 'rats to overcome.
