They still recorded over 100,000 phone calls. That's a heck of a sample size considering the media does presidential polls of 1,000+ people. Is it "representative"? No clue. It has been fairly accurate in the past as long as people consider margin of error.

Brandon Rogers, Jared Cotter, Sundance Head, Phil Stacey in the "botom 4"? Wouldn't surprise me. I picked Brandon and Jared to go. Phil was truly dreadful but he's better than that. Sundance has struggled but I gave him some extra points for throwing out a Pearl Jam song on American Idol. talk about not a good fit....

BUT, of those 100,00 calls, how many people actually made them? How many times could 25 people say, call during a s hour window, using software that would automatically do all the work for you.

They are more off this year, than they were near the end of the season last year. I think their sampling numbers are going to be smaller.

FWIW:

Blake: I have to say I'm a sucker for any ska-based alternative song, so this was by far my fave of the night. I actually have this one on heavy rotation on my iPod, so I was really surprised. Best song choice of the night ; )

Sanjaya: The kind of hula dancing that he was showing looked like the feminine (shock!) style; the masculine style is athletic and bombastic. "Things that make you go Hmmmm". Hey, that would be a great song choice for you, Sanjaya! I thought his hair kinda looked like Shaun Cassidy's in the 1970's. The little girls will LOVE it.

Sundance: I was another one who immediately thought, "How did they get Pearl Jam to okay this...". Sorry, Sundance fans, he murdered this song. You can't make that song less frightening and keep its effectiveness as a alternative masterpiece. That song should scare the beejeezus out of your 10-year-old daughter. Sundance just karaokied it.

Chris Richardson: I still like this guy, even though he picked the wrong country song for his voice. I think he should have done a John Hiatt-type rocker. The beginning was shakey, but he brought it up by midway. At least he showed everyone that he can do something besides hip-hop. Simon mentioned his nasal quality; like I said last week, that's what I like about his voice. So sue me.

Jared: Next. Don't sing Stevie if you aint got soul, brotha.

Brandon: Somebody get this guy a list of songs from the 90's - 00's. Although it was better than last week, and one of the best performances of the night, he continues to pick songs that don't work for him. Maybe he's not a lead vocalist after all. He seemed really out of breath by the end.

Phil: OMGosh. Everything was wrong. Everything. Next.

Chris Sligh: Sappy song. Performed by a guy with a lisp. I liked his performance, but I didn't like the song. And he's gotten super-humble and super-sweet in the after-interview, which I suspect is an act. Maybe I can't get past the hair? Whatever it is, I am slightly disappointed in him. I can't shake the feeling that we haven't seen the real Chris S.

As a side note, I thought Paula looked positively lucid last night and actually made some sense. She didn't just parrot what Randy said five seconds before. I also felt like the banter between the judges and Ryan was too weird. I had no idea what they were talking about most of the time. Definitely an off night for Idol. In fact, for this stage of the competition, I'll say it was the worst night in the history of the show.

Best

1. Blake

2. Chris S

3. Chris R

4. Brandon

Should go home:

Phil, Sanjaya

Will go home:

Jared, Brandon
