No, they shouldn't monkey with the format. My gut tells me that whatever it is will not in any way, shape or form live up to the hype surrounding it.

Don't fix what isn't broken. That's my opinion. Looking at the "talent" remaining this season, I'd say it's broken.
Oh, and the "trios" thing doesn't work, because what happens once you get down to 11?
