Personally, I am getting a little Jennifer Hudson-ed out. Yesterday was Jennifer Hudson Day in Chicago.

I know what you mean, but the Oscars are the granddaddy of all these show biz self-congratulatory awards, and are still at the top of the heap, so we're going to hear a lot more about her for some time to come.

BTW, I still think that going from being hand-picked by David Geffen and Jamie Fox for the role in Nov. 2005, to being buzzed up as a sure-fire Oscar winner by Aug-Sept 2006, to actual Oscar winner in Feb. 2007 is remarkable even by Hollywood fantasyland standards. Everybody and their brother have been lining up to cash in somehow, someway on the Idol phenomenon. I can't escape the feeling that Geffen, Hollywood and the "Academy" of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are no exception.

If memory serves, of the top-tier awards shows (Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Tony), only the Tonys have yet to give an award to someone Idol connected. That could change if Diana DeGarmo's star keeps rising over Broadway.

Oh tell me about it. We also have all this junk with Daley trying to bring the Olympics to Chicago. Yesterday, they combined both with Obama addressing the Olympic committee. AND Jennifer Hudson day.

I didn't watch much news yesterday.

The only person who is on the news in the Chicago area more then Jennifer Hudson is Obama. Trust me, it's overkill.

Just catching up with the thread.. I've decided that next season AI should expand to THREE categories, and therefore, THREE nights..

Guys, Girls, and Gays

FWIW:

Blake: I have to say I'm a sucker for any ska-based alternative song, so this was by far my fave of the night. I actually have this one on heavy rotation on my iPod, so I was really surprised. Best song choice of the night ; )

Sanjaya: The kind of hula dancing that he was showing looked like the feminine (shock!) style; the masculine style is athletic and bombastic. "Things that make you go Hmmmm". Hey, that would be a great song choice for you, Sanjaya! I thought his hair kinda looked like Shaun Cassidy's in the 1970's. The little girls will LOVE it.

Sundance: I was another one who immediately thought, "How did they get Pearl Jam to okay this...". Sorry, Sundance fans, he murdered this song. You can't make that song less frightening and keep its effectiveness as a alternative masterpiece. That song should scare the beejeezus out of your 10-year-old daughter. Sundance just karaokied it.

Chris Richardson: I still like this guy, even though he picked the wrong country song for his voice. I think he should have done a John Hiatt-type rocker. The beginning was shakey, but he brought it up by midway. At least he showed everyone that he can do something besides hip-hop. Simon mentioned his nasal quality; like I said last week, that's what I like about his voice. So sue me.

Jared: Next. Don't sing Stevie if you aint got soul, brotha.

Brandon: Somebody get this guy a list of songs from the 90's - 00's. Although it was better than last week, and one of the best performances of the night, he continues to pick songs that don't work for him. Maybe he's not a lead vocalist after all. He seemed really out of breath by the end.

Phil: OMGosh. Everything was wrong. Everything. Next.

Chris Sligh: Sappy song. Performed by a guy with a lisp. I liked his performance, but I didn't like the song. And he's gotten super-humble and super-sweet in the after-interview, which I suspect is an act. Maybe I can't get past the hair? Whatever it is, I am slightly disappointed in him. I can't shake the feeling that we haven't seen the real Chris S.

As a side note, I thought Paula looked positively lucid last night and actually made some sense. She didn't just parrot what Randy said five seconds before. I also felt like the banter between the judges and Ryan was too weird. I had no idea what they were talking about most of the time. Definitely an off night for Idol. In fact, for this stage of the competition, I'll say it was the worst night in the history of the show.

Best

1. Blake

2. Chris S

3. Chris R

4. Brandon

Should go home:

Phil, Sanjaya

Will go home:

Jared, Brandon

BTW, speaking of pissing contests, the following is an example of the ridiculous levels they can descend to when people are determined to boost their favorite at the expense of others. This is a post copied verbatim from Pulse Music Board. (Some of what the poster said in her list of firsts is not true.)

Re: Fantasia - "Fantasia" - Starring on Broadway!

Blessings come in many ways. Fantasia is the only American Idol whose accomplishments will list many first.

1. First American Idol and Billboard artist to debut at #1.
2. First American Idol to be nominated for 4 Grammy awards.
3. First American Idol to receive the most nominations such as NAACP Image award, Soul Train, Lady of Soul, Billboard, etc.
4. First American Idol to have a book on the NY Times Best-selling list.
5. First American Idol to star in her own biography on television which scored the second top rated movie on Lifetime.
6. First American Idol to star in a Broadway musical.
7. First American Idol to score a critically-acclaimed CD.
8. First American Idol to score contracts with a jean company and MAC cosmetics.

So stop talking about the lack of sales of "Fantasia" which should reach gold status soon and take a deep breath with her because she has done so much in a span of almost three years. She is the ultimate performer and is so diverse that she can sing anything and do anything. When her life is over, her accomplishments will read like a thick book and her legendary status will read like a Who's Who. She will last long in this business because she does not limit herself to just making records, but breaking them.

Just like Aretha, Gladys and Patti, Fantasia has already etched her Divaness in stone. They made a lot of firsts.

By the way, she tore that song up on American Idol Thursday.

Note that this poster is dismissing the poor sales of Fantasia's new album, while at the same time putting her in a league with superstars like Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight. Will Fantasia get to that level in her career some day? Who knows, and the poster is certainly entitled to her feelings about Fantasia. But come on..."First American Idol to score contracts with a jean company and MAC cosmetics?" When fandom gets to that level, I say it's time to go outside, enjoy the sunshine, and discover some of the other joys the world has to offer. :)

Yeah, like that's really something to be proud of!

Since we can't trust "America" to kick off a bad singer like Sangaya how can we trust them to know what a well written song sounds like? It has to be better than the "puppy dogs, rainbows and furry woodland critters" songs of the past though...

True, but, it should be good for laughs, and who knows, someone might write a good one.

Hi StrictTime. Interesting recap. Can I pipe up and say I don't like any of them? That's why I haven't been posting recaps.

Blake is the best of a sorry lot, in my opinion. I think Chris Sligh has a really good voice, but he is defeating himself. He reminds me of a wounded duck trying to hide from a hunter. He hides a potentially big talent behind all that hair and his weight and his lame jokes. It's sad.

Strangely enough, Melinda Doolittle also fits the wounded duck analogy but, in contrast to Chris, she seems to have made the decision to put it all out there come what may.

I was just doing a little digging to see if I could find some info on "the surprise". One really interesting theory is that AI is going on the road and each episode of the finals will be in a different city. That's kind of cool!

I thuink it might be hard on the contestants to practice while on the road. They don't get much timeas it is. Did you read this in an article or a message forum?

In my digging I found a story that we had heard earlier about the contestants being broken up into trios. But one article went further to say that people will vote on which trio sucked and then the judges will pick one person from that trio to go home! That would kill the show, IMO.

I agree, it would kill the show. As soon as the judges get to say who goes home instead of the viewers, (meaning they get to say who wins), you can hand them Fonzie's water skis. I think it was you that brought that up earlier. When they get to pick the winner, there won't be a reason to watch, imo.

My gut tells me that whatever it is will not in any way, shape or form live up to the hype surrounding it.

Now THAT is something I think we can all agree on! LOL It's like when they try to 'new and improved' some product, it usually sucks after they have improved it.

I think that Chris Sligh has a really nice voice and would probably kill some old Meatloaf tunes or some other soulfull cuts. His image stinks and his snarky attitude hides a ton of insecurity. If he only had some confidence but again, we are dealing with mostly amateur talent so perhaps if he stays in longer he might evolve like Elliott did.

Outside of him the guys are lounge acts at best and shame on Simon, Paula and Randy for promoting this sorry bunch to the top 12 male vocalists.

I really like the women this year. I look forward to hearing Lakisha, Melinda and Jordan each week for different reasons. They can all seriously sing and I would pay to hear the three of them do a performance.

That's after 13 weeks of AI bootcamp and consultations by some professionals but the raw talent is there.

Personally, I am getting a little Jennifer Hudson-ed out. Yesterday was Jennifer Hudson Day in Chicago.

Try to hang in there. It shouldn't last much longer. I like Jennifer and wish her continued success. I know they overdo things, tv guide is notorious for it! But, each time they show her, and interview her, I just remind myself, IT COULD HAVE BEEN FANTASIA! I am so glad the role went to Jennifer. I can't even imagine how fantasia would have screamed and oooh babied her way through the movie.

Besides, it isn't Jennifer's fault if they play her up all the time. She doesn't make tv guide channel show her clips all the time

Something else I wondered about. How many times do past contestants have to thank AI before its ok to not mention AI anymore? Carrie's always gracious and thanks AI, but in 5 years will she still have to repeat the AI mantra of profuse thanks or else get beat up on because she didn't?

You both are right. I didn't think of that....

I'm glad he's doing so well, I really liked him best last year.

This year.....(sigh)....not much to choose from, especially with the guys. I like Blake and Chris Sligh best. I actually think Blakes talent of beat boxing is cool and I would totally buy his record. Chris is a good singer, but he's kind of boring. All the other guys aren't worth my time.

As for the girls, I hope Sabrina takes it. Although I like Lakesha and Melinda, they sound like every other black female artist out there and I've heard enough of that type of music to last the rest of my life. Ugh. I'm just not into the R&B, Hip Hop stuff. Sabrina is unique and compared to the other girls, is the best sounding female.

Just my $.02

I don't remember off the top of my head (I know, I should have saved a link to the site), but I believe it was both.

Honestly, I don't think anyone knows for sure and everything is just speculation. Somehow they have managed to actually keep a tight lid on this one.
