Mary Cheney and Partner Are About to Be Moms
Washington Post ^ | December 6, 2006 | Amy Argetsinger and Roxanne Roberts

Posted on 12/05/2006 11:04:34 PM PST by West Coast Conservative

Mary Cheney, the vice president's openly gay daughter, is pregnant. She and her partner of 15 years, Heather Poe, are "ecstatic" about the baby, due in late spring, said a source close to the couple.

It's a baby boom for grandparents Dick and Lynne Cheney: Their older daughter, Elizabeth, went on leave as deputy assistant secretary of state before having her fifth child in July. "The vice president and Mrs. Cheney are looking forward with eager anticipation to the arrival of their sixth grandchild," spokesman Lea Anne McBride said last night.

Cheney, 37, was a key aide to her father during the 2004 reelection campaign and now is vice president for consumer advocacy at AOL. Poe, 45, a former park ranger, is renovating their Great Falls home.

News of the pregnancy will undoubtedly reignite the debate about gay marriage. During the campaign, Mary Cheney was criticized by gay activists for not being more publicly supportive of same-sex marriage. Her father said people "ought to be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to" but deferred to the president's policy supporting a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages. Cheney herself called the proposed amendment "a gross affront to gays and lesbians everywhere" in her book, "Now It's My Turn: A Daughter's Chronicle of Political Life," which was published in May.

Cheney has described her relationship with Poe -- whom she took to last year's White House dinner honoring Prince Charles and Camilla-- as a marriage. The two met in 1988 while playing ice hockey and began dating four years later. They moved from Colorado to Virginia a year ago to be closer to Cheney's family.

I've seen it happen, though, in two instances; the father had a tough time with a son's gayness and "decreed" what he would and would not put up with; in both cases the mother was the moderating influence and reconciled both sides over time.

You couldn't even read the first SENTENCE of the article to find the answer, before posting? That's lazy even by FR standards.

People say all kinds of things that they would do or accept, but you never know until you actually face the situation. Lots of people say that they would never accept a gay child, a biracial grandchild, or something else, but when it happens and they actually deal with having to say goodbye to their loved one forever, they can't do it.

Some can, however, and you have to wonder whether they understand the idea that you are supposed to love their children unconditionally.

I may not agree with Mary Cheney's decision to raise a child with her girlfriend, but it isn't my concern and I am glad the Cheneys have shown that they love their daughter and new grandchild.

You're absolutely correct, linda_2203. Just read the title and it smack of such absurdity that two women were about to be moms, "Mary Cheney and Partner Are About to Be Moms," that I busted a gut, spit coffee all over my keyboard, while tackling a phone call.

Sorry about messing up your day.

Have a good day now and don't worry too much about my reading abilities nor sloppy posting.

An apt comparison may be made between radical Islam and Nazism. During the 1930s and early 1940s, there were certainly American supporters of Nazism, such as the German-American Bund, and like-minded fascist and white supremacist groups like the Silver Shirts and the Black Legion. However, the overall support for such groups was minimal, and while they deserved surveillance and were indeed spied upon, they never posed any significant ability to overthrow the Federal government. The principal threat from Nazism was external, that is, from the armed forces of Nazi Germany and its Japanese ally.

You think the situation with same sex parents is bad now, just wait until a RINO like McCain or Giuliani gets the presidency. Yeah, they'll pretend during the primary like they'll vote against gay marriage and gay adoption and all of that, but just look at their voting records. McCain, for example -- against a federal same sex marriage ban, likes gays in the military, etc.

This country is in for a heap of trouble if we don't stop them.

So let me get this straight -- you're a horrible father because you try to instill good morals in your children?

There are three types of law in the Old Testament: civil, religious, and moral.

The civil law, which covers areas such as punishment for theft, adultery, murder, etc., was applicable to a specific nation (Israel) in a given time frame (from the time of Moses to the dispersion of the Jewish nation after the fall of Jerusalem). Granted that legal codes in Christendom drew in part upon Biblical precedents, for example, Justinian's Code and the English common law, the Biblical precedents were not considered binding, but were used as examples. They also used classical Greco-Roman legal codes and Germanic customs, among other sources. If I recall correctly, the position of orthodox Judaism has been that the civil law of the Pentateuch is not binding on either Jew or Gentile until the return of the Messiah. It is a nearly universal position in both orthodox Christianity and Orthodox Judaism that the OT civil law is not applicable to any contemporary society.

The ceremonial law of Israel is what covers such areas as the Temple ritual, the dietary laws, circumcision, etc. Given the Christian position that Jesus Christ's substitutionary atonement is regarded as satisfying God's justice for the believers and will remit the punishment due for their sin, the elaborate rituals of the Old Law were rendered obsolete. Remember that the Judaizers were defeated in the early church at the church council in Jerusalem described in Acts 15. Romans 2:29 notes that circumcision is not of the flesh, but of the heart. Peter's vision in Acts 10 where he heard God stating that there were no unclean animals overrode the Old Testament dietary laws. There are numerous other examples. The position held by the Christian church since Apostolic days has been that the ceremonial law of the Old Testament are not applicable in the current age.

What has not been overturned in the current age and is applicable to all of mankind is the moral law. Most of its precepts are repeated in the New Testament and are affirmed by both Jesus and Paul. The one difference between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant is that we are not saved by the law, but by grace. As Ephesians 2:8-10 states: "For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves". The moral law is our guide to God's standards and is binding, but obedience thereto does not save.

I think that Mary Cheney and her partner raising a child is more beneficial to society than a nineteen-year-old living in a ghetto "raising" three children by three different daddies.

So, basically you think that the gays are going to make all the good god-fearing Conservative men divorce their wives and marry other men? Because otherwise I don't see how it's being "shoved" down our throats. Like all interest groups, gay people are advocating for what they want.
