In my book picking up your shellcasings is at most a ministerial fault.

If you were to do it after a self-defense shooting in your home, before the police arrived to document the scene, you'd be looking at 20 years--and that is assuming all you did was wound the guy. If the intruder died, you'd be looking at Murder One, and life in prison. These guys got light sentences by comparison.

In Virginia if I shot a perp in my home the cops won't particularly care what happened to the shellcasings. For one thing, I'd be alive and they'd be happy. Secondly, I'm not a cop and am unaware of any rules regarding the care and tending of the immediate aftermath of a self-defese shooting.

Maybe your state has different laws. Here we have guns ~ and can carry them openly in public.
