TUESDAY, Oct. 17 (HealthDay News) -- A new study finds that at least 1 in every 4 smokers will develop progressive and incurable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a much higher risk than previously believed.
COPD is a respiratory disease that results in blocked air flow to the lungs and grows progressively worse.
For this study, published online in the journal Thorax, researchers at Hvidovre Hospital analyzed data on 8,000 men and women, ages 30 to 60. All were monitored for 25 years as part of the Copenhagen City Heart Study.
At the start of the study, all the participants' lungs were healthy and working normally. However, over the course of the 25 years, the lungs of almost all the male non-smokers continued to function normally, compared to 60 percent of men who continued to smoke.
Among women, 90 percent of non-smokers still had healthy lungs at the end of 25 years, compared to 70 percent of smokers.
Overall, 25 percent of the participants developed moderate or severe COPD over the 25 years. Persistent smokers were six times more likely to develop COPD than non-smokers.
During the 25 years, there were 2,900 deaths in the study group. Of those deaths, 109 were directly attributable to COPD, and nearly all those deaths were in people who were active smokers at the start of the study. Only two non-smokers died of COPD.
The study also found a sharp decline in the risk of COPD among people who stopped smoking soon after the start of the study. Over the 25 years, none of these ex-smokers developed severe COPD.

"More eroneous assumptions."
I didn't have to make any assumptions at all about you, your posts reflect the type of person you are. That you are shocked that you reap what you sow is very telling.

"Smokers jam their smoke down my lungs."
How is that even possible? Are you not capable of staying off of property where smoking is allowed?

By replying to your #20 post, it should be self evident that I hadn't read your post#163 yet.

LOL...we're all going to die, remember? If you say that, in the context that you said it, you're belittling life. Since you appear to have no reverence for the life that has been given to you, why waste your time living it if you're so willing to risk losing it for something as "enjoyable" as smoking?
Of all of "natures gifts" that a person could enjoy, I never understood why smoking would be one of them. Maybe smokers just have an oral fixation or something? ;o)
If you got 'em, light 'em!!! Aaaaaaaahhhhh...that burnin' leaf tastes GOOOOD!

Cities all over the place. Great masses of people live in these cities, and still only one in four get lung disease.

I smoked for 40 years, developed lung cancer in 1998, had surgery, was cancer-free until Oct. 2005, now have lung cancer again. My lung function is so bad I can't have surgery or radiation. I have emphysema, and regardless of the outcome of the cancer diagnosis, will probably die of the COPD. Not a pleasant thought. And I'm convinced that if I hadn't smoked all those years, I wouldn't have these problems now.

IIRC,
That's a standard post for those who find smoking disagreeable.
I guess one size fits all.

Thankfully, it has gotten much better in recent years.
But some folks still ignore the "Do not smoke within 50 feet of doorways" as well as other areas I must and/or choose to be or pass for various reasons.
But most of the time, I'm blessed by relatively smoke free air.
Now . . . pounding hard rock music at considerable volume . . . that's another pollution hard to avoid.

I say ; "anyone born after 1960 should not be eligible for any medical subsistance related to nicotine if they CHOOSE to kill themselves after all the publicity smoking has gotten over the years."
Yet I will bet you are the first one in line for an AIDS walk, or to promote "research" into AIDS with contributions. An almost completely voluntary, but totally preventable disease. The only Innocent parties are babies born with it, health care people stabbed by accident, or women who's husbands had a choice and chose wrong. (All of the involuntary cases could have been prevented except for the selfishness of others)
The numbers of people who are selfish and endanger others is centralized in the gay community, NOT in smokers. There isn't one spec of valid evidence that even second had smoke is dangerous. Some people are just willing sheep being led to slaughter.
Whether one actually is a smoker or not, to not see the hypocrisy and the drastic contrast between these two habits, as well as the attacks using misinformation, is just that. Blindly following the other sheep right to the slaughter house, and then stepping up for your own slaughter without question.

That is patently false. I have done research with NK cells with respiratory specialists. Real scientists.

Yep, the result of legislating away smoking lounges that kept those evil smokers out of your sight. Now you are upset that the policies supported by the anti smokers are coming home to roost. Liberals are so funny in their stage 1 thinking.

Have never been a liberal. Never will be.
I was conservative even as a teen.
Slow suicide smoking behavior is not a liberal idea. It's not a conservative idea. It's a seduction from the evil one. It enriches the coffers of destructive globalists.

"Have never been a liberal. Never will be."
Well you have your talking points down pat. You rail against individual liberty and complain about the choices of private property owners. If that isn't liberal, then I don't know what is.
"It's a seduction from the evil one. It enriches the coffers of destructive globalists."
The Righteous Right and the Loony Left are equals. Both are willing to utilize government guns to enforce their morals, trampling on the individual's rights in the name of the community. Both are equally dangerous to our great Republic and both have no place in legislation. Both are enemies to freedom.
That you think your brand of socialism isn't liberal is rather comical.

Um...according to Oxford, asthma is most closely associated with hospital birth. IOW, it comes from being to clean. So Mr. Harvard M.D., the answer to asthma is getting infants hooked on cigarettes? BRILLIANT!

Do you have factual data supporting your statement that 1/4 of smokers will not get COPD..but will get the things you listed? Let me guess...you didn't read the study referenced in this article. Go back and try again.

"You could put a bullet into the chamber of a revolver, spin the chamber, cock the hammer and pull the trigger, and you'd still be making a healthier choice than you sorry bunch of consumptive addicts." That is the singlest most ignorant post I have ever read on FR. Scratch that, it is the single most ignorant post I have ever read on either FR or DU. And that includes the Trolls.Out of curiosity... why? Your odds of dying from Russian Roulette are considerably less than they are from smoking.
