One in Four Smokers Will Get Lung Disease

TUESDAY, Oct. 17 (HealthDay News) -- A new study finds that at least 1 in every 4 smokers will develop progressive and incurable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a much higher risk than previously believed.

COPD is a respiratory disease that results in blocked air flow to the lungs and grows progressively worse.

For this study, published online in the journal Thorax, researchers at Hvidovre Hospital analyzed data on 8,000 men and women, ages 30 to 60. All were monitored for 25 years as part of the Copenhagen City Heart Study.

At the start of the study, all the participants' lungs were healthy and working normally. However, over the course of the 25 years, the lungs of almost all the male non-smokers continued to function normally, compared to 60 percent of men who continued to smoke.

Among women, 90 percent of non-smokers still had healthy lungs at the end of 25 years, compared to 70 percent of smokers.

Overall, 25 percent of the participants developed moderate or severe COPD over the 25 years. Persistent smokers were six times more likely to develop COPD than non-smokers.

During the 25 years, there were 2,900 deaths in the study group. Of those deaths, 109 were directly attributable to COPD, and nearly all those deaths were in people who were active smokers at the start of the study. Only two non-smokers died of COPD.

The study also found a sharp decline in the risk of COPD among people who stopped smoking soon after the start of the study. Over the 25 years, none of these ex-smokers developed severe COPD.

I wonder how people will answer this question: if you knew that the NEXT cigarette you smoked was the one that will give you cancer, would you smoke it?

The nonsense argument for smokers is that only x% of people get cancer and none of them think it will be them, but it has to be someone...so...would you smoke it if you knew?

He means that the total risk goes up. The risk per street crossing is the same each time. (Except for rush hour.)

For smoking, the total risk goes up each fag consumed.

"anyone born after 1960 should not be eligible for any medical subsistance related to nicotine if they CHOOSE to kill themselves after all the publicity smoking has gotten over the years."

I'm fine with that.......so long as the federal and state governments refund every dime in tobacco taxes paid by smokers since 1960.

I smoked for 15 years and have been on this site for 3 years. I have NEVER spoken to any smoker who claimed smoking was good for a person or seen any serious posts on this forum claiming that smoking was good for a person.

I don't smoke any longer but I am still amazed at the sheer hatred displayed by many non-smokers toward smokers. Like liberals, many believe lies are OK since the end should justify the means. Lies like somkers claiming that smoking is beneficial to one's health.

What about those before ? My father died of COPD and Emphysema as I will also however he died years ago. As an Air Force Pilot the USAF gave my father flight rations, Meat, bread, vegetable, dessert, chiclets and 4 cigarettes. Yet after he retired the took away his benefits for lung problems because he smoked the cigarettes they gave him.

"Screw it, I like living life, and if I go a little early, tough crap, I'm having fun. I don't plan on having anythin left at the end, I want to use up every single bit of life in me."

I still say I'd rather die at 70 doing what I want than live 'till 90 doing what I hate. Time becomes God to some people.

My post was in jest. However, i have seen posts where people cite that smoking helps prevent certain diseases.

BTW-I am not an anti smoking nazi. While disease is a risk associated with smoking I think the bigger problem with smoking is the dependency it causes. I posted the story because it had a great headline, and it would encourage much discussion.

I did not write the story but would not be surprised if someone published a study stating that cigarettes kill 8/5 of smokers.

Three out of four smokers will not get COPD.

That doesn't mean the other 75 won't get other lung diseases - like lung cancer. No males in my family seem to live over the age of 65 - they all seem to die of lung cancer. I'm just praying that my mother and father quit smoking in time to avoid all of that.

This isn't junk science. People who smoke should have all the facts at hand, and people who don't smoke should also know what they might be getting if they start.

Not one of the people on the Puff List has ever claimed that smoking was the healthiest thing to do, but you two fucking assholes keep repeating that shit until you believe it.

You could put a bullet into the chamber of a revolver, spin the chamber, cock the hammer and pull the trigger, and you'd still be making a healthier choice than you sorry bunch of consumptive addicts. Not the healthiest thing to do? That's an understatement of the likes even Baghdad Bob would be ashamed of.

Yes, but people should have the right to play Russian Roulette, have unprotected gay sex or smoke cigarettes.

Some, I am sure do all three and live to be 98.

And that's exactly what smokers and gay men who have anonymous unprotected sex have in common -- because they know a sister's hairdresser's friend's uncle who somehow lived to 98 doing exactly what they're doing, they convince themselves that they too will be an exception. Except they almost never are.
