I am deeply ashamed of everything I said. He's ashamed that his true views came out for everyone to hear.

While I like Mel Gibson as an actor, his drunken, aggressive conduct and hateful words as a 50 year old father of six and a role model for many are reprehensible. I'm reminded of the old Roman maxim, "Vin Veneto Veritas" -- "with wine comes truth" (not literal truth, but what the inebriate really thinks when his tongue is loosened).

At least it is a sincere apology. It's still hard to accept -- not so much the drunk driving part as the other. I don't know what to think.

He made some mistakes, and his first one was picking up the bottle. He is powerless over alcohol, and his life immediately became unmanageable.
I'm willing to give him a pass, if he's willing to plug the jug.

Gibson showed his true colors last night during his arrest. I argued with you about THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST and his portrayal of Jews. I stood up for Gibson to you and a number of my Jewish friends. Now, I'm sorry I did.

Un un-Kennedy-esque.

They say alcohol reduces your inhibitions.
Wasn't his father said to have been "leary" of people who practiced the Jewish religion?
It appears the apple didn't fall far from the tree.
Having been caught on video however, he really had no choice but to apologize.

Absent a denial, we must assume the quotations are accurate. Hmmm. In vino veritas. That's pretty damn disappointing.

OK, he said all this wacky stuff on only 0.12 % alcohol level?
That isn't "crazy drunk". That's just crazy.
Mel has built up a lot of infrastructure around his religious views. If he seriously wants to solve what's going on in his mind, there is going to be a lot of fallout to those around him.

Film star and director Mel Gibson has launched a scathing attack on US President George W Bush, comparing his leadership to the barbaric rulers of the Mayan civilisation in his new film Apocalypto. Oh yeah ask him about the Pope too.... not the real pope he says very quietly

I'm going to give him a break here for one reason: there are things that I have done and said that I am deeply ashamed about, and reflecting and meditating on that flawed behavior has changed me as a man. Maybe he is a screaming Jew hater. He can change. One thing that Christianity has taught me is that all have sinned and all can be forgiven. Another lesson I've learned is that people are transcendent beings. We are not stuck on autopilot like God's lesser creatures. In fact, some of things that I am deeply ashamed about are contained somewhere in documents that are now sealed, so I know what it is like to have your shameful behavior posted in public for all to see. I know how small and stupid I felt; for a star like Mel Gibson, that public display must be extraordinarily humilating. I hope Mel uses this incident to become a better man.

I like Mel Gibson and I love the conservative messages in his recent movies like Brave heart.
He has made the best, and the most pro American Vietnam war movie ever made.
His movie on the last hours of the Lord Jesus Christ's last hours is unmatchable in Hollywood history, and will endure far past his lifetime.
He is an alcoholic and got busted again for drunk driving.
So far I'm shocked at the viscousness of the feelings many on FR have towards him.
I think the liberals will be even worse in their responses, so it will be interesting to see how a DUI charge unfolds for the Hollywood directer that would dare to make "Passion of the Christ".
Before he made his pro Christian movie, nobody would have predicted that the popular movie star Mel Gibson would become a hated figure to much of the power establishment in Hollywood and opinion makers in the media.
