Mel Gibson's statement on his DUI arrest
GrandForksHerald.com ^ | 7/29/06

Posted on 07/29/2006 1:51:47 PM PDT by LdSentinal

The following is the complete text of Mel Gibson's statement regarding his arrest for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol:

"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the L.A. County sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person.

"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said.

"Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry.

"I have battled the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."

I have to ask you about that "sleepy from being old." Freudian slip?

Gibson should not be judged by what his father or any of his family believe IMO.

He told Diane Sawyer, in a 2005 interview, that "my father never lied to me."

Since his father denies the Holocaust and holds the Jews in contempt, it is fair game to ask him if he holds the same views, or if he believes in the truth of them.

Because I think it is about things other than Mel Gibson's stupidity.

Yes, this has been asked of him again and again and again ad nauseum to trap him into some kind of statement. Typical behavior of Sawyer and the rest of the MSM.

Because of the intense pressure to defame his father, I can see why Gibson might have made a positive comment such as this about his father even though it might not be true.

I'm not going to necessarily hold Gibson to a 6 word statement among all the millions of words he delivered in the myriad of interviews he has done. I'm sure he has said a lot of stupid things...in fact, I know he has because I've seen him say and do stupid things on various occasions.

Here's what I think you might be getting at: the jew-blaming left and the MSM are gonna be wall-to-wall on Mel Gibson because it's a great way to instigate touble and arguments between pro-Israel conservative Christians and pro-Israel Jews.

Stupid things and hateful things are not the same.

Anti-semitism is hateful.

Anti-semitism is hateful.

Yes, all hateful comments against any person or persons are just that...hateful.

And we all do it at times.

Yes, we all do it...but very few of us have the ability and influence to reach and affect a global audience...and that's the difference in this case.

Here's what bothers me about this discussion:

Mel has seemed like a fairly OK Hollywood type, religious, family man, does some movies that go beyond the usual Hollywood drek, etc. He gets drunk, drives, and is reported to have said some hateful things while being arrested.

I guess I'm surprised at the depth of the condemnation. Maybe it is because we expected more of him, sort of thought he was more like us.

It goes beyond all of that though, because he is such a religious guy and because, unfortunately, of the controversy behind THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST. That PRECISELY why this is just so disturbing. So I guess that's what it is so bothersome to you...so I guess we agree.

And we all do it at times.

No, we are not all anti-semites who despise Jews or blame them for starting all wars.

Jesus gave his life willingly - the Jews did NOT take it!

And that is why it is so important for public figures to make public apologies. And that is what has happened.

One can be cynical and say that the apology is only a ruse. But the fact that Gibson has acknowledged that he is totally to blame and finds his own behavior "despicable" is certainly the approapriate step to take if he is truly repentant.

Christ was killed by sinful humans. He lived a human life without sin and accepted death at the hands of men he was saving. His example and sacrifice expatiated all sin of mankind, past present and future, before his Father in Heaven. I believe that's a more accurate summation of the doctrine.

Fine he apologized...but the damage is done...and I know you know that.

No, we are not all anti-semites

You're taking my statment out of context. I didn't say we are all anti-Semites. I said we are all hateful at times. Whatever person or persons it is directed toward, it is hate.

We all do it.

because he is such a religious guy

Is it because he's religious, and not only religious but a "weird" kind of Catholic?
