Following Sequoyah's development of a syllabary in 1821, Cherokees took enthusiastically to reading and writing. When Stand Watie began writing is not certain, but his only surviving letters date to the Civil War

We may not know when he bagan writing, but we can be pretty confident that the first words he wrote were "free dixie", "DAMNYANKEE", and "SCALAWAG".

I suppose he impressed his fellows in the Confederate legislature by his ability to reason, or write a telling essay.

Pity others don't emulate him better.
