If the state have absolute sovereignty, why is there such limits on the states as found in Article 1, section 10?

I agree that unlimited federal power is not good, but just as the 10th Amendment to the Constitution rightly puts limits on federal power, Article 1, section 10 limits the states.

The fact that federal power is limited by the Constitution doesn't mean state power is unlimited.

I never said that State power was unlimited. The People (meaning you and I and other non-political types) can always fall back on their GOD given right as expressly stated in the 2nd paragraph of the Declaration of Independence - "When a government becomes abusive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it laying a new foundation for government which will secure these ends." Jefferson went on to say that "it is a duty" and this was meant to keep politicians in check, reminding them that they are servants of the people. In case you're thinking that the Declaration was a one time good deal - NOT SO. It is where our uniquely American beliefs are written for posterity. However, the Federal government was limited in its size and scope as was distinctly laid out in article one. The States had the major portion of power prior to 1865. Now the Fed is a behemoth that can stick its nose in your business anytime it wants, this is also a direct result of the Northern victory in 1865.
