My theory is that Americans have neither the belief system nor the temperment for such a sisyphean sport as soccer. We are a society of doers, achievers, and builders. Our country is dynamic, constantly growing, and becoming ever bigger, richer, and stronger. We do not subscribe to a “zero sum” mentality. We do not labor for the sake of laboring. And we like our sports teams to score.

That classic... "Bend it like Beckham"
The movie Bend It Like Beckham appealed to a broad audience of fans and non-fans alike. Most feel that Parminder Nagra did a great job of showing what it would be like to be raised in a close-knit Indian family. Keira Knightley played the rebel focused on getting her friend to travel to Germany (how ironic) for the big game. It was an entertaining movie. I think an actor that looks very similar to David Beckham made an appearance towards the end of the film.

Victory is a classic.
We had a game in P.E. called Gatorball. It was only played by a select group of idiots that didn't mind going out on cold, rainy days (mostly us football players, but a few soccer players and even some heads played though Frye boots weren't what I'd recommend for quick stopping and turning on wet, muddy fields). Gatorball was a combination of football, rugby and soccer.
Played with a soccer ball on a soccer field, you started off with the ball on the ground and you could kick it around or you could pick the ball up off one bounce or catch it in the air and run. It was tackle (of course) and there were three ways of scoring. You could throw the ball into the goal for one point. You could kick the ball in for 2 points. Or, you could line up some blockers and run it in for 3 points. Picture a corner kick except the goalie isn't the only one who can catch the ball...
The school AD always went out to the football concession stand and had some fresh hot chocolate waiting for us after the game.
As all good things would come to an end, one of the varsity soccer stars was playing and was slammed by a football player. He suffered a compound fracture of the leg and was out for the spring season of his senior year. That pretty much sucked for him but things got worse... Gatorball was officially banned.
I got an 'A' though!
There was some sort of variation to Gatorball (one could throw for a touchdown) that was also played in my youth. Tackles were permitted, but they couldn't be of the blindside variety since helmets and pads weren't worn...basically it was pulling a person to the ground to take them out of the play. To run one had to bounce the ball every five steps. It was so long ago the details are difficult to remember. I think they used to call this "Speedball" or something like that.
That is definitely another game that could coexist with traditional soccer.

A broken finger would sideline a professional baseball, basketball, or tennis player as surely as a toe injury could sideline a soccer player.
Aaron Rowand, for example, did get placed on injured reserve earlier this May with a broken nose and facial fractures. Injuries happen and players temporarily can't play...that is life in professional sports and why they hire such excellent doctors, trainers, and nutritionists.

How about that France vs. Spain match earlier today? Goals all over the place as France advanced to play Brazil this upcoming weekend. Can't wait to see Germany vs. Argentina on Friday afternoon. Good stuff.

I did see it -- sad to see Spain play like such a dog. THe French just outdid them, plain and simple.
ARG v. GER will be something else, I'm sure.
