What's more, it seems to be a popular misconception among creationists that the fossil record is the only body of eividence supporting evolutionary theory, when in reality, it's but a fraction of the testable evidence (though it is the most sensational - the media loves a good fossil find).
I very highly recommend Carl Zimmer's book Evolution:The Triumph of an Idea - very enjoyable reading (even though it's a few years old now (2001) and doesn't include some of the most recent discoveries in the field), accessible to a layperson, and very widely comprehensive (with lots of good color pics to boot!). I'm willing to bet with your curiosity about the subject you'd really enjoy the reading.
