The point most Neo Confederates want to ignore is that the only reason the south feared Lincoln and the republicans is that they knew that sooner or later slavery was going to be outlawed in the Whole United States, and that the only way they could stop that from happening in the south was by secession.

The reason the Emancipation Proclamation did not free one slave in the Northern slave states is that it was meant to prevent the confederacy from putting blacks on the front lines as soldiers. It was a brilliant political move that removed any possibility of the South using the promise of freedom to get slaves to fight for them.

I know it's a bitter pill to swallow, but it's true

First off.... please don't equate party politics of the 1860's to that of today. You must think I'm an idiot if you believe that I'll buy into that Republican argument. Yoo many of the PC types here try that. Second, your point about slavery being outlawed was widely known throughout the south... regardless of whether there was a Confederacy or not. Slavery was on the way out and everyone knew it. Slaves were bought and sold under the US flag for nearly 100 years... and under the Confederate flag for just over 4 years. There were many other issues at hand, including economic issues as well as issues of power and influence. Lastly, the Emancipation Proclamation was no tendered until well after the war and was clearly designed to keep Europe out of the war.

I see your PC history lessons have warpped your reason. The use of "neo Confederate" is a dead giveaway to it.

The issue was expansion of slavery into the west. Slavery itself was already guaranteed by the Constitution and Lincoln had stated he would support it. Why would the South risk everything by seceding and fighting a war that risked life, fortune and honor just to see the expansion of the institution into the West?

The WBTS was vast and caused by myriad differences.

And there is no historical record that I know of, nor have I seen posted, that shows the North went to war for emancipation. It went to war to preserve Lincoln's precious union and the tariffs he gleaned off of the South.

Then by that reasoning we can conclude that the real purpose for the Emancipation Proclamation was military, and was not born out of any great compassion for the slaves, they were just a convenient excuse.

Truth be told, the North saw their sugar daddy starting to slip away and fought tooth an nail to keep it from happening, creating the greatest constitutional crisis this country has ever seen. The end result being a federal government that bears little to resemblance to the one envisioned by the framers.

Now THAT's funny....
Slavery was on the downhill slide world wide and would have died a natural death here in the US.
Slavery was the catalyst for the war for Southern Independence, sure; but it most certainly was not the only reason by far. The secession of Southern states was brought about by a ever enlarging Federal Government who ignored the very document that gave it it's authority.
Now, aside from speeding the abolition of slavery along by a few years, what was really won?
In the few years after the war ended, the Constitution was effectively laid to rest, and we ended up with what we have now.
A mammoth, ever intruding, all knowing, all seeing, police state where we still enjoy the remnants of Liberty, but only at the whim of the federal government.
We are no different than a nation with a King - we just happen to have a fairly good king right now.

Cordially,
GE
