On Larry King, Taylor said there were things that Simon said that ticked him off and I believe drove him to do certain things better. Don't forget Simon also gave Taylor some high marks too.
Simon was looking right at Taylor while speaking to Randy and Paula, go watch it again...I just think it's not plausable that Simon, who works every day in the recording industry, and has had the success he's had picking what works, didn't recognize Taylor's immediate talent. Simon knows how to get the best out of people...I believe in the most cunning way that's what he was trying to do with Taylor.
Btw, you said you "listened" to the clip, does that mean you've seen it also? I think it's crucial to look at the way Simon is talking to Taylor, IMO that gives him away.
