Back in the 1980s one of the movie channels (Showtime probably) played a Schmege Brothers production. I was never interested because of the title. One night my dad was watching the last 1/2 hour of the movie and I cracked up laughing. Never came on again but that last 1/2 hour had me in tears--especially John Candy.
I always like Candy's various characters on SCTV, particularly LaRue as in Cooking with LaRue. One sketch had LaRue giving recipes for poor people using dog food and ketsup. His character was a chain smoking so the ashes were falling into the mixture while he made the meatloaf. I think LaRue also had a child's show called Reading With LaRue or Bedtime Stories With LaRue.
IMO, the closest movies that captured Candy's talent were Schmege Bros., Splash, and Planes, Trains, & Automobiles
I agree....with the exception of Splash... and SCTV is one of my favorites....of all time!
I keep begging my kids & grandkids to get me the SCTV series for Father's Day...they just smile and think I am old.....
Real comedy....is what I need...dangit!
