5,509,826 Californians voted for George W. Bush in 2004:

Are you seriously claiming that NONE of those were illegal aliens who became citizens under Reagan's amnesty?!

Answer: somewhere between 1 million and 1 billion per year.

We allow that now. So what is your complaint? That we haven't gotten to the billion mark yet? Are you serious that you would allow a BILLION foreign entrants per year? Seriously? Would that be all from south of the border or would you consider some of the Christian Sudanese that are being slaughtered daily?

I don't want any terrorists entering the U.S., legally or illegally.

Bottom line, I think that the conditions set forth in the guest worker plan would separate the wheat from the chaff.

The guest worker plan will just be another way to enter the country and will not materially affect the numbers of illegals entering unless we secure our borders. Being a "legal guest worker"' will increase employer costs and subject the workers to background checks, taxes, and return.

The H-1B visa program was invented in 1990 because of congressional panic over a forecasted labor shortage which never materialized. The program allowed for 65,000 temporary visas, good for up to six years, for people in "specialty occupations" tied to a specific employer. The main payoff of an H-1B visa is sponsorship by one's employer for a green card, and indeed the program, which government audits have identified as rife with abuse, has become a backdoor toward permanent immigration.

All those that wish to be Americans can follow the guidelines, and those that don't (probably 1/4?) would make it much easier to identify and target the no goods.

I don't know where you come up with the estimate of 1/4 who won't come out of the shadows. I think the number will be much higher in terms of non-compliance. Why should they? They have to pay a fine, start paying taxes, undergo a background investigation, and disclose their whereabouts in the US. And they will become more expensive to employ by their employers. I also doubt that we would have the administrative system and political will to enforce this program.

Anyone who is illegal and in prison here should, of course, be put right out.

Yeah right, we have laws on the books now that require such action. Mexico has refused repatriation of their citizens who are held in US prisons. Everyone agrees that it is a good idea to bell the cat, but who is going to do it?

The guest worker program also has a "one strike " provision that would, IMHO, really help establish some much needed law and order within the immigrant communities.

Law and order? What is the problem with enforcing the laws we now have? I just don't see the proposed guest worker program being enforced any better than our current laws on illegal immigration. It is just another way for politicians to paper over the problem without doing anything material to change the status quo.

Considering there are only 100 million in Mexico, they can't "all" be from south of the border. We only allow 700,000 total legal immigrants per year currently, so it's not a million either. We kill more unborn babies per year than that.

"You mean you can't imagine a tagline that would be aggressive?

Sure, I can. Mine is not. This thread has nothing whatever to do with religion, so my tagline is irrelevant to the thread. It's relevant in some threads, I suppose, but all it does is identify my belief system. I do that so nobody will ever be confused. I don't mask my disbelief. I don't encourage otherse to disbelieve, either.

It's hardly aggressive.

I did look it up, it doesn't give a total.

Suffice to say that out of 35 million people (total) in CA, Bush got 5.5 million to vote for him. Let's just assume, for the sake of arguement, that 20 million of those are actually registered to vote.

Hardly a ringing endorsement for the voting power of the mythical Reagan amnesty conservatives now is it?

We only allow 700,000 total legal immigrants per year currently, so it's not a million either.

Where do you get that figure? WHERE? Look at the letter from USIS that I posted. Here again:

http://uscis.gov/graphics/publicaffairs/DayinLife_050629.pdf Some of the DAILY work of USIS according to their own document:

* Conduct 135,000 national security background checks

* process 30,000 applications for immigrant benefits

* Issue 7,000 permanent resident cards (green cards -PER DAY)

* Welcome 2100 new citizens.

* Welcome 3500 new permanent residents. Does this look like we are not allowing enough "Legal" entries?

The United States admits between 700,000 and 900,000 legal immigrants each year. This number does not represent the actual number of people settling here lawfully — rather, it represents the total number of people who were granted permanent residence ("green cards"), half of whom are already living here, some illegally, some legally on temporary visas.

The mechanism for selecting legal immigrants is very complex, but all legal immigration flows have at least three components — family, employment, and humanitarian. Our family immigration program admits the spouses, parents, and minor children of U.S. citizens without numerical limits, and has limited categories for the adult sons and daughter of citizens, the siblings of citizens, and the spouses and children of non-citizens. The employment-based categories are a complicated collection of preferences ranging from "priority workers" to unskilled and religious workers and investors. The humanitarian categories include refugees, asylees, and those receiving "cancellation of removal," i.e., longtime illegal aliens whose deportation would cause hardship for American family members. In addition, there is a visa lottery for people from countries other than the primary sources of current immigration

Found the total, 6.7 million for Kerry.

Once again, hardly a ringing endorsement.

Some of that 5 million vote, just statistically speaking, has to be GOP former-illegal, now citzens - that's my point.

Well, since I want every legal immigrant to be on the path toward citizenship (see, e.g. Teddy Roosevelt's view on that subject), I was specifically looking at the "2100 new citizens" per day figure. Any more questions?
