As time goes on management note that they could get the same performance on a particular project from and engineer getting paid at the 10 year rate as the engineer with the 20 year rate. Economic decision making is then in affect and when the time is right the older engineer is replaced. That's the business of engineering.
It means that only fools will go into engineering.
