Bush just sounded the death knel for this deal. He can't veto things that happen at the state level.
It was foolish of him to make such a statement. Even if he ultimately wins, which I doubt, he will lose significant political face over this.

Naw, the Dems will shut up once they realize that the only US company that could actually fulfill this contract is Halliburton.

I agree. Foolish statement by the President about a "veto", if true. Was Jimmy Carter standing beside him as he spoke?
This issue looks like election year gift from the President to the democrat party.

"Even if he ultimately wins, which I doubt, he will lose significant political face over this." Really, remember CFR? He said he'd sign it if it hit his desk. It did, he signed it and got reelected. Now he's drawn a line in the sand on this issue. After this threat and the Harriet Miers flip-flop he can't back down now.

This will be good for House Republicans. They already plan to run against Bush this year on illegal immigration, this will add bonus points.

He can veto federal legislation that would block the deal. He shouldn't, but he can.

he will lose significant political face over this. So what? He's out, right? There was an article about how he's going to spend his retirement.

He can't veto things that happen at the state level. The idea is that Congress would pass something to block the deal...

Is it at the State level? The Port of Hampton Roads was excluded from this deal because it is State owned.
