The evidence supports your opinion. It's definitely genetic in rats; there are "alcohol-preferring" rats used in experiments. No specific gene has been found in humans - the best guess is interaction between genetics and environment.

The work I am familiar with focuses on dopamine receptor genes. Google <"David Comings" alcoholism> if you are interested in more. He is probably the absolute authority on the subject.
