The bottomline line with comedy is this: If you're not invested in the subject matter, the comedy doesn't work. Kinison didn't brilliant religious comedy because he was deeply invested in it from his days as a preacher. Dennis Leary is invested in it as a Catholic.
The South Park guys are invested in nothing but the pablum of pop culture.
