Survival is not a goal. It is a statememt about what is. There's lots of sloppy writing about this, even from science writers, but sloppy writing doesn't change reality.

Survival????No, survival is just what happens, it isn't a directed goal. If genes were conscious and could direct their mutations then you could start talking about the goal of survival, but that isn't the case.
