What is a "night manger"? He is the graveyard ( midnight to 8am) shift manager at a restaurant probably like Denny's or IHOP.
Very sad, sounds like the man was trying to make a difference in his life and his daughter's.

WRONG... a 'night manger' is where you go to lay your head at night when the NO VACANCY sign is lit...
