The Golden "M" Leaves Oranjestad

ORANJESTAD-An ongoing dispute between the owners of Mc Donald's restaurant and Boulevard N.V. that manages Renaissance Mall was concluded in court. The judge decided that Mc Donald's must leave from Renaissance Mall before January 1st 2006.

Mc Donald's had a rent contract for their establishment at the Renaissance Mall that ended in mid 2005. Boulevard N.V. prolonged the contract for a few months in view that Mc Donald's could not find a suitable new location in Oranjestad for their fast-food restaurant. In addition Gandelman Jewellers was not ready to move in as the new tenant. Once the prolongation ended the owners of the fast-food chain did not want to leave and decided to fight their case in court.

There is no rent protection law for commercial establishments on the island. The Judge said that Mc Donald's was told in advance that the contract will no longer be prolonged and was given enough time to look for another location.

Mc Donald’s has 2 other fast-food restaurants in Palm Beach and Santa Cruz. The closure of Mc Donald’s in waterfront Oranjestad marks an end to 20 years of hamburger sales on one of the hottest commercial strips on the island.

the aruban franchisee of this McD's is probably better off after being tossed, because the business has surely suffered drastically in recent months and will get worse.....come to think of it, now is not a good time to be opening a cheap jewelery/trinket store, either, LOL.

Aruba can dry up and shrivel, slowly.....and I'll enjoy knowing it is happening. Aruba needs to find another means of survival......the dutch freaks that rule it have finally dealt it its death blow.

It is time for aruban Arawaks to take back their island from their masters who have continued the colonialism into the 21st century. Are they still Arawak, or are they slaves and puppets of the Dutch?

Does it make sense to replace a high traffic business with a much lower traffic business in a mall? Seems a strange business decision by the mall management.
