Per her friend and former boyfriend Nathan Hecht (now on the Texas Supreme Court), Ms. Miers was given a handgun by her brother which she failed to learn to use. Also, in the aftermath of the Luby's massacre, she wrote a letter to the editor/editorial to the Texas Lawyer that could fairly be read as being opposed to the banning of handguns because of acts of a criminal maniac. This is a common sentiment in Texas which does not address what kinds of "reasonable restrictions" the writer believes can constitutionally be placed on the right to keep & bear arms.

This is hardly the sort of evidence that I require to feel satisfied that Ms. Miers would, for example, strike down the assault weapons ban or how to apply the 2nd Amendment to the states.

So you don't want a strict constructionist, one who only decides a case based on the law, the constitution and the arguments in front of them? Instead you want a right wing activist who will legislate from the bench, just the way you want? I don't think that's what the President promised, nor is it what I've been working for all these years.

I want legislatures to decide these issues, not the courts. If a case is brought that raises the right issues I honestly believe that she will vote the "right way," but she won't invent something to get the result that I, or Bush, would like.

As to what she wrote about the Luby's incident, you might post what she actually said, rather than just your characterization of it, so that others can judge:

The same liberties that ensure a free society make the innocent vulnerable to those who prevent rights and privileges and commit senseless and cruel acts. Those precious liberties include free speech, freedom to assemble, freedom of liberties, access to public places, the right to bear arms and freedom from constant surveillance. We are not willing to sacrifice these rights because of the acts of maniacs.

As to her having "failed to learn to use" her handgun, all he said was that when he took her out to learn to shoot it she couldn't hit anything. He specifically said he didn't know if she still has it or ever learned to shoot it. He did say she wanted a big gun so that she'd be sure to stop anyone attacking here.

I like that.

And as to that being her attitude because she's a Texan

I like that, too.
