Affirmative action is when you give someone extra points for being a female or minority.
I have no problem with this ruling because it doesn't give anyone extra benefit. It just evens out the field.
Considering the ruling was unanamious it didn't seem controversial at all.
This is really not affirmative action.
I'm sure the original height and weight requirements were set up, not to discriminate against women, but because applicants of a certain size were necessary to carry someone out of a burning building, lift a ladder or haul a stretcher.

Whoever is qualified should be the rule. Didn't you even read the posts above about firefighters? You want a tiny little lady trying to do a man's job that requires a man's physical strength and size?
Affirmative action is the very essence of evil discrimination. It discriminates against those who are qualified in favor of those who aren't.
Well, it allows less qualified (ie. smaller, presumably weaker)applicants to become firefighters. And its done expressly to allow women to get the job.
I guess you can argue some technicality that it isn't "affimrative action", but its just as bad (or maybe worse) to me.
