A complicated issue. Superficially, the "Dutch" seem nice. However, there is enormous guilt in Holland from their days as colonizers (and the Dutch were considered the most brutal of the colonizers). Add to that the Nazi occupation where the Dutch learned about true repression - but this time on THEM. Result? They have no wish to repress anyone and have completely lost any moral authority for fear of being repressive. So, what do we have? A country with no backbone and a "anything goes" mentality.
So, am I surprised that the historically corrupt and brutal Dutch (who now seemingly cannot distinguish right from wrong) produce people like the Van de Sluts and a legal system that gives judges incredible authority to ... do nothing?
As with any ultra-liberal, guilt-ridden society, they will be unable to cope with the "New World Disorder." That is, they are completely incapable of dealing with the problems created by their rapidly rising Muslim population (with the small percent of violent Muslim extremists and a larger percentage of angry and violent Muslim teenagers). There was an incident where a gang of Moroccan youths gangraped a white, retarded girl. The judge refused to prosecute the case for fear of stirring-up anti-Muslim hatred. So, they were let off! And we expect a decent law enforcement system in the Natalee Holloway case.
Some posters are still convinced that the police/courts will do their jobs since the tourist industry in Aruba will suffer. This is not the Dutch system (see above). Natalee will not receive justice as we know it, even if Joran is arrested for murder - he will never be found guilty.
This is why boycotting Aruba is so important. Visiting Aruba is a vote for their spineless legal system and corruption.
I am clearly trying to catch up here but I so agree with your post #607!! It will be a miracle if Natalee receives any justice from this Dutch cesspool of corruption and collusion.
