"Exactly. NAFTA was a badly negotiated deal that was sold as a job creator for our country."

NAFTA started in 1994:

BLS 1993 Average Unemployment rate 6.9% (Before NAFTA)

BLS 2004 Average Unemployment rate 5.5% (after NAFTA)

Today we are at 5% as of last months figures. Seems that there are MORE jobs after NAFTA... Would you not agree?

Panics and Depressions have NOT always been caused by the stock market.

But yes, there are a great many safety-nets in place now, which stem bank runs and market collapses, which were absent in the past. That's part of it.

Panics and Depressions are the final steps in a long line of bad things happening, from recessions turning downwards, to continual strikes, which in turn deflate the markets and with people out of work, purchases goes down which lead to mortgage defaults, etc.

The GREAT DEPRESSION was NOT caused by just the Crash of '29! Most of the world was already in a vast Depression ( fueled by the loses of WW I, the horrific Treaty of Versailles, and the devastating war reparations France demanded be paid by Germany and Austria and their allies.

And then, there were the unending coal and other strikes in England, with combined with the huge loss of life in WWI, followed by the devastating Spanish Flu, damned near ruined that economy.

Though most people think that America "roared" throughout the 1920's, the first 1/2 of that decade was pretty bleak here as well; economically speaking.

But, if you want a more detailed explanations of depressions, just ask, since I know that I'/ve somewhat veered off that, in this reply.

If "real wages" are as bad as you claim, then why is home ownership at an all time high? Furthermore, why are tax revenues so high that it shrunk deficit projection by ~90B last quarter?

As for the unemployment figures being cooked, that is nonsense. The reality is that we are moving toward a golden age of small businesses and entrepreneurship. It requires a slightly different way of collecting and interpreting employment data to capture this paradigm shift -- the household survey. Which is a great thing in my book.

What about the other 4%?

If the top 1% is gaining all the wealth, whilst the "bottom" 95% is losing all it has, that's 96%.

You haven't the glimmer of an idea what you're talking about and your math skills stink!

More and more people are amassing more and more wealth and going up the ladder, than are "losing" what they have. Your entire post is utter codswallop, interlaced with Marxist drivel.

I doubt I'd fit in since I love freedom and hate socialism. It is you who holds a blind fate in the system and president. I do not, I actually try to understand what he is up to.

The guy that used to be an engineer and is now driving a federal express truck is making less money. But he is employed.

I have a clue for you.

The older worker has ALWAYS been at a disadvantage in the job market.

The engineer is replaced not by a NAFTA citizen in another country, but by a younger worker with a recent degree in the recent advances in the field.

And his state of the art education in engineering outweighs the experience of the older worker because he hasn't accrued all the pay raises and benefits (especially pension plan benefits) yet of the older worker and is more flexible in job description and location.

My dad lost his engineering job for these reasons long before NAFTA.

The only way to save the US is to deport all the liberals to France or Cuba. Free one way tickets for all who hate the US, and I'll even agree to the taxpayer funded part.

f you want illegal immigrants to stop coming HERE you have to make it more attractive for them to stay THERE.

And NAFTA has been SO successful, hasn't it!?

Yes, that is sarcasm.

Seems to be a few of those that would offer support, regardless of any policy, or anything for that matter. As long as they are in the same political club.

Yes, continue about some of the things that go into the snowballing effect of bad trends or events.

When I said unemployment checks, I was referring the unemployment insurance that puts money into unemployed workers pockets to keep them in the consumer pool (and able to pay their mortgage) until they can get another job.

I hold a "blind FATE" in NOTHING!

I looked at your personal page. You claim to be a "true Conservative". You aren't much of a Conservative at all; true or otherwise and claiming that we are headed for or are in a " POLICE STATE", only proves that you not only do not know the meaning of quite a number of words`, but are also devoid of historical knowledge.

You don't "try" to understand anything at all; least of which, what "the president's up to"! Or is it just that you TRY, but keep failing miserably?

Long before there was Federal Unemployment Insurance, many ethnic societies, had unemployment funds. They also made sure that widows and orphans were taken care of; but that's a whole other topic.

It's late, so I can't really go into this much more, right now, but I promise you that I shall get back to you on this. K ?

Glad you didn't include Canada. We're trying to rescue the Canadians, not sink them.

Not even sure it's fair to Cuba to send them there, just when Castro might die and they might have a rebirth and new chance for a better life.

How about to China or North Korea or Iran?

Bush has the power to deploy the military to our borders for national security reasons.

But it doesn't really matter what powers the president has because he hasn't even tried to do anything. He doesn't even talk about this issue. He calls the minutemen "vigilantes". Even if he was the head of a dictatorship he wouldn't do anything because it's obvious that he doesn't want too. If anything Bush has a history of trying to block anything that might help protect our borders. Bush does have the power to close our borders he just doesn't want too. Right after 9/11 Bush could have gotten the support he needed to do anything it took to close the borders without anyone who mattered saying a word

I don't see how anyone who feels we need to do more to protect our borders can defend Bush on this issue. Bush sure seems to pressure congress on the issues he supports. Have you seen him do that when it comes to illegal immigration? No, he only does that when he's trying to get something that might help our illegal immigration problem out of a bill.

I realize this has been a problem for many years. There have been very few politicians who have ever really tried to solve this problem. But Bush is the current president and he hasn't even attempted to do anything positive to secure our borders. If we are attacked by terrorist who come through one of our open borders then Bush will be rightfully blamed. It might be different if he was making an honest effort to get the job done, but he isn't.
