"" He's blamed his mother for this mess, saying that if she'd been home, he wouldn't have gone out. And presumably, Natalee wouldn't be dead and he wouldn't be in all this trouble. It's his mother's fault. Any psychologists care to dissect Joran's mindset?""
Sometimes there's an element of truth in what crminals say. When Juran said - "Mom, it wouldn't have happened, if you were home,", he might have meant - Dad was involved and he would not have been involved if you were home.
Another thing Juran said to his Mom - "I should have taken to Natalee to a responsible adult". Possible translation - I took Natalee to Dad, who is NOT a responsible adult. I call the above coded language. You have to figure out the meaning, which might include some truth in it.
Hope this made sense. :)
Papa VDS looks the other way whenever J acts up, and doesn't deal with it, or deals with it by ignoring it, but Mama tries to keep him in line. Maybe grounding him, etc. I think J was telling the simple truth. He wouldn't have sneaked out if she'd been home. He wouldn't have gotten in all this trouble. But he's blaming her, nonetheless.
The J quote that he should have taken N to a responsible adult, if Papa wasn't involved except with telling them to keep quiet -- reads like more blame the victim, and I'm such a gentleman. The setup, according to J and the K bros. is that N was drunk and maybe self-drugged. J tried to help, being kind and virtuous, but on second thought, he now realizes he should have taken N to a responsible adult. She was more than he, just a young man, could handle. If this reading is accurate, J was really pouring it on.
