Gee, if the rape of tourists was so rampant on Aruba, you'd think the public would have heard of it before now. I know many people who've gone to Aruba, but none of them ever mentioned being raped. Or even that people were getting raped.

Well Eddie, if you take a cruise on Holland American lines and it stops in Aruba the crew will warn you the locals like to rob and rape the tourists on their last evening on the island. The reason is so that the tourist will not have time to report it.

I have posted these before....perhaps you missed them. They're from people who seem to know a bit more about Aruba than you and I. I have no reason to doubt them. I do believe we have something to learn here, as with all the sites and postings that so many have made on FR. Thanks again to all!

In case you think Aruba is a safe little island, it is well known for international drug trafficking and has been called "a smugglers paradise." Aruba is controlled by the Cuntrera Sicilian Mafia and is a major player is drugs. Aruban government officials are closed tied (bought off) by the mafia: former Premier (Henny Eman) and Minister of Justice (Edgar Vos) were so blatant that the people tried to get them out of office but couldn't. Why do drug dealers operate around all the hotels and night clubs with impunity? Because the police are told to leave them alone. Why can't Natalee Holloway be found? Because the government will have to expose the mafia, & heads will fall....literally. This is well documented from years and years of Aruba government corruption.

Another post on scaredmonkeys:

Did hear that if you paid a certain amount to the cops that they would give you permission to have raves. This came from a “posters” in riehlworld. He also said that if you are alone at night on the beach with a love interest, that the police would get their turn at the girl plus get your money and jewlery in order to “look the other way”.

Crime Information. Most visitors to the Caribbean have a relatively safe trip. However, thievery, purse snatching, and pick pocketing do happen, particularly in cities and at beaches. There has also been an increase in violent crimes, such as rape and assault against tourists. In some places, U.S. passports and identity documents are especially attractive to thieves. Robbery of yachts is a problem in some marinas. Here are some precautions to keep in mind: -- Safety begins when you pack. Leave expensive jewelry, unnecessary credit cards, and anything you would hate to lose at home. -- Use a concealed money pouch or belt for passports, cash, and other valuables. -- To facilitate replacing a lost or stolen passport, carry two extra passport photos and a photocopy of your passport information page and other identity documents with you in a separate place from those items. -- Do not take valuables to the beach. When possible, use the hotel safe when you go to the beach or into town. -- When you enter a marina, register with the local government authorities. http://travel.state.gov/Publications/tips_caribbean.html

There was another gov website about crime in Aruba & one about organized crime, too. Can't find them, but they are here on this thread. I didn't know anything about crime in Aruba until this thread and some of the very informative posts herein.
