I'm forced to agree with you on both points. I'm a northerner who was startled by the politeness and honesty of southerners and bewildered by their bowing down to the police as a matter of course. They thought I was some kind of radical for respecting the police but not thinking they had the right to just poke around in my life or car at their whim.

Bingo - Exactly right - Southerners are da*m good people but their forefathers would surly be turning in their graves if they saw how they allowed Gov't (police) to poke around in their lives. I simply have found it shocking how 90% of my fellow Southern friends act as if police are some God almighty force that all should bow to and lovely respect no matter how much they try and poke around where they don't belong.

I'm a conservative living in Boston, and I am always amazed at the lack of respect some people have for the police up here. But that's merely a healthy skepticism compared to the attitude some of our southern neighbors have. Up here our attitude is "The police work for US."
