disputed scientific topic

Disputed by whom?

I would put money on the table that if the subject was about "global warming" the author would have been welcomed with open arms.

Disputed by the school system, obviously. A fluff over global warming would be just another ploy to disguise the fact that the school is playing games instead of teaching reading, writing, and math.

My children have all learned to read and write without the appearance of a single saleswoman author. Astonishing!

There has never been a time in my life when schools and teachers weren't being blasted for some book or another.

If I were designing a science curriculum I would include some sort of mythbuster class to get kids used to the idea that arguments can be settled by experiment.

At some point, perhaps around eighth grade, they should be taught the concept of the double blind experiment.

No offense but are you really not aware that the scientific community has proved woefully inadequate at proving the "man evolved from an ape" and the "it all started with a big bang of a super dense particle" theories? It's beyond being disputed: Evolution/Big Bang has become just another religion in which a reasonable percentage of the human population earnestly believes.
