Excerpt...

Her travels may be over, but Wilbanks' troubles may have just begun. Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter said he was examining evidence for a possible charge of making false statements to a government agency.

Sartain believes that's not necessary.

"She is deeply regretful of the pain she caused her family, her fiancé, her friends and the community who rallied to her aid," the lawyer said Wednesday. "I believe Jennifer committed no crime."

Arrests for shoplifting

Sartain, a former Hall County district attorney, knows her client. Court records show that Wilbanks was arrested three times in that county on shoplifting charges from 1996 to 1998.

In 1996, as district attorney, Sartain prosecuted Wilbanks for allegedly shoplifting $1,740 in merchandise from a Gainesville mall, court records show. Sartain dropped the felony charge after Wilbanks, then 24, completed a pretrial diversion program, the records show. Wilbanks performed 75 hours of community service and paid restitution, according to court records.

Months before that felony arrest, police had charged Wilbanks with misdemeanor shoplifting for allegedly taking $37.05 in merchandise from a Gainesville Wal-Mart. Court records show that officials dismissed the case after Wilbanks completed "Project Turnabout," a six-week counseling program for shoplifters.

She was arrested again, city court records show, in April 1998, when Wilbanks, then 25, was charged with shoplifting $98 worth of merchandise from a store. She pleaded guilty and served two weekends in jail. A judge also sentenced her to probation, a $400 fine and 50 hours of community service.

That joke is so old, my dear, that I heard it before you ever landed in Manhattan. :-)

Yes, N.Y.C. has always been loaded with peculiar people, but that has never meant that one had to socialize with them, but you do .;^)

"You bet that there is more to this story and I bet that none of it will be less onerous than the things that are just now coming out about her past."

With 14 angry bridesmaids and goodness knows how many distant cousins so close to this fire-light of fame, I imagine you're right. What comes after the 'breast implants' and shoplifting stories, I wonder?

I still predict that we'll find out this wasn't a jilting, though, and that she didn't mean to "stage" her own kidnapping (she went along with the media story, was all, very impulsively and almost immediately after she discovored her predicament).

"I don't think that a week goes by when I don't see "adult women" either drugged to the gills or reduced to such a childlike state by their husbands that they are virtually non-fuctioning adults."

Be careful. Women who dominate and psychologically DESTROY their once-successful husbands also exist. Believe me, I know. And I am SICK AND TIRED of this 'men abuse women' CRAP, DO YOU HEAR ME?????????????????

JUST AS MANY MEN ARE PSYCHOLOGICALLY AND PHYSICALLY ABUSED/DESTROYED BY PSYCHOTIC WOMEN AS VICE-VERSA, OK???

IT IS ONE OF THE MOST SUPPRESSED 'NON-PC' TRUTHS OF OUR AGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I talk to strangers. Sometimes they offer me weekends at their beach houses instead of candy.

"Jen gave 100s of people days of living through a nightmare, but her lawyer claims that it is she who lived through a trauma? Good grief!!!"

It's becoming evident that her family must have at least half-suspected the truth. Maybe they lost control of their judgment. Remember the circumstances: 600 people arriving in town to attend the wedding.

I've seen that, too. What the guy first perceives as a woman who is filled with whimsey, natural sexuality and insight can devolve into a nightmare beyond description.

My experience has shown that the arts, particularly dance, acting and "performance art" have a high percentage of these women...but you never know what variety of deranged "performance artist" lurks in the heart of the seemingly normal soccer mom.

This was a premeditated act and yes, she "staged" it, long before the media ever got wind of any of it.

I really don't understand why you and some others here, feel compelled to excuse her for such unconscionable behavior.

Not a jilting, when she left her engagement ring behind and ran for dear life? Oh puulllllllllllllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeze.

Sure she took back the ring, now, and claims that she still wants to marry her also ridiculous case of arrested development fiance. They've been offered big bucks, BTW, for "their story".

**But I do know that if some of the comments I've seen here were made to my face about my daughter, the person who uttered them would wake their sorry ass up in an ER.**

Exactly my sentiments, and I'm a big and strong guy, to boot.

Perhaps, gentlemen. But in the morning, your daughter would still be an amoral nutcase, and you would be in jail.

I don't know about the 'artsy women', but I can curl your hair with 'Dr. Jekyll/Mrs. Hyde' stories of super successful, smooth, admired, worshipped, 'have it all together' women who turn into absolute MONSTERS when the family home door closes.

Usually at the expense of their hard-working, good-natured husbands, who try all but moving teh sun and moon to satisfy their wives - and get nothing but fire spit back into their faces - and often physical abuse (once an unstable 'two-faced' woman like this learns that her husband will not hit back - because he is a gentleman - she often ratchets up the physical abuse, knowing also that if he EVER tries to restrain her, odds are that the police will arrest HIM, not her.)

I feel a rare, and not entirely misplaced, sense of sympathy for the producers who will have to deal with these people.

It was five years since she had sex.

Hmm. It was five years since she had sex and over six years since she shoplifted. Looks like she better start pilfering again so she can 'get a little'.

;-).

man . Got to admit, that's the truth.

Last one I dated went ballistic because I smirked at her ideas about "psychic healing". We're not in touch any more. I suspect she's part of a Vagina Monolouges road show, now.

Wish she'd come back.

Trust me. Women in the arts are the worst. They can be the best, but when you hit on a bad one -- watch out. These are people who operate without boundries.

When you read between the lines...never married, numerous relationships (none lasting long), most of the guys were from the local gym or the fire department (which is a indicator of short-term "groupie" status), and the fact that she recently had a boob job...there is a history to this gal. And the fact that she selected Vegas to disappear to...just adds to this entire story.

She won't marry this guy...I'm willing to bet on this...and she won't be marrying any guy in the next five years. She is short-term luggage...and won't be changing that status. Guys need to just move on.

We don't know that yet. Sure, it's likely, but we don't know how they've responded, or anything at all about whether they're being driven by money.

You're starting another rumor, and for the next five threads there will be people saying they "heard" that. Cut it out.

She'll be married within the year to an old boyfriend who, as she will say, "...re-appeared at the right time and proved to be the person I was looking for all along."
