Her travels may be over, but Wilbanks' troubles may have just begun. Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter said he was examining evidence for a possible charge of making false statements to a government agency.
Sartain believes that's not necessary.
"She is deeply regretful of the pain she caused her family, her fiancé, her friends and the community who rallied to her aid," the lawyer said Wednesday. "I believe Jennifer committed no crime."
Arrests for shoplifting
Sartain, a former Hall County district attorney, knows her client. Court records show that Wilbanks was arrested three times in that county on shoplifting charges from 1996 to 1998.
In 1996, as district attorney, Sartain prosecuted Wilbanks for allegedly shoplifting $1,740 in merchandise from a Gainesville mall, court records show. Sartain dropped the felony charge after Wilbanks, then 24, completed a pretrial diversion program, the records show. Wilbanks performed 75 hours of community service and paid restitution, according to court records.
Months before that felony arrest, police had charged Wilbanks with misdemeanor shoplifting for allegedly taking $37.05 in merchandise from a Gainesville Wal-Mart. Court records show that officials dismissed the case after Wilbanks completed "Project Turnabout," a six-week counseling program for shoplifters.
She was arrested again, city court records show, in April 1998, when Wilbanks, then 25, was charged with shoplifting $98 worth of merchandise from a store. She pleaded guilty and served two weekends in jail. A judge also sentenced her to probation, a $400 fine and 50 hours of community service.
This chic has MAJOR issues!
She was an honor student!
That's all that jumps out at me, in this article.
It's none of our business. We've all made mistakes, and this girl has a knack at being caught in public.
What distresses me is that she's bringing out this lynch-mob mentality, when it's so clear that these public humiliations are more than punishment enough.
Hopefully the marriage is still on, and she won't go into a deep and fatal blush at all this attention.
Making false statements to the authorities in GA is a felony
I'm sure the business who lost the $1,700 didn't think it should have been whitewashed either. It sounds like someone has been covering her *ss for a very long time. And her family knowing that about her and came out in front of hundreds of cameras and made believe Jennifer was pure as the driven snow. She would never run away! Pure BS!!! I blame them as much as Jennifer for the mess. Surely Jennifer gave some clue as to how unhappy she was! She should have been in counseling a long time ago!!!
But that would mean no sex for a loooooong time, and she'd end up running away again! It's a vicious cycle.
The closest thing that I've seen to 'factual' information on that was what the church put up on their web site.
There's already a Wikipedia entry on her.
Years ago, this would NOT have been a "private" situation at all. There may not have been 24 hour hour T.V., but this story would have been on T.V., radio, and nationwide newspapers.
What's CRUEL is what this shoplifting, fake boobed, bug eyed, lying 34 YEAR OLD ADULT WOMAN did to friends, family, and the police of several different locals.
Excuse me, but she has already committed more than one FELONY before she called 911 to report a kidnapping and RAPE! If she had only run away that would be different. She planned and executed a KIDNAPPING by cutting her hair, having someone pick her up and drive her to the bus station (which investigators are now saying wasn't a taxi), leaving behind her personal belongings to make it seem like a CRIME, etc. That isn't just a runaway bride. That's pulling off a PREMEDITATED FELONY.
That boy has "issues", too.
By the way, I don't think Martha Stewart was UNDER OATH:
from the website dcbar.org:In the Martha Stewart case the codefendant, Peter Bacanovic, allegedly gave a false statement under oath. He was charged under the general perjury statute, title 18-1621. Martha Stewart allegedly gave a false statement to the government, but not under oath. She was charged under the false statement statute, title 18-1001. The jury was instructed that in order to convict Bacanovic of perjury the government must offer proof of two witnesses or one witness with corroboration. But in order to convict Stewart no extra proof was required.
lol
Nam Vet
You are correct
Her family enabled her sociopathy over many years and knew well she was/still is unreliable, a liar, a thief, a fruitcake - her influential family was playing CYA
Note she picked out a "Hispanic" (race card played during high media coverage of illegal aliens and borders) and accused him (and his Caucasian wife?) of kidnapping and raping her
[I*m not pro-illegals!]
This couple turned out to be folks who gave her a free ride in NM - I believe one is in the local media
That guy could be in jail right now as they await DNA results from her (possible) Vegas adventures
Texas, Vegas, NM -
There is a lot missing here - and how she got to the bus station is not coming out - she is still lying
So much for "poor little Jennifer" the "victim"

GREAT FALLS, Mont.(CP) - An Alberta alderwoman is to appear in a Montana court Tuesday to answer to charges of lying to police about her three-day disappearance in the United States.
If lied about the taxi, then she should be made to say who took her bus station.
But men don't then claim to have been abducted and raped; now do they?

Just as a for instance, would she have seriously believed that by leaving a few locks of hair behind, people would have concluded she was 'kidnapped'?
Also, I believe it's been reported that the clothing the police found was not hers.
We don't know how she got to the bus station, yet, either.
