The Supreme Court, and indeed the entire federal government, are creatures of the people, and subservient to them - the courts are not their masters. The Constitution requires that the states governments be 'republician' [representative], and as such, the seceding states exercised their sovereign right to modify their form of government. The states had previously done so (New England Confederacy, Articles of Association, separate and independent declarations of independence, Articles Of Confederation, Constituion). No provision of the Constitution prohibits secession, Chase invented it for those stupid and gullible to believe anything.
