DeLay Apologizes for Schiavo Case Rhetoric
AP via Yahoo ^ | April 13, 2005 | Terence Hunt

Posted on 04/13/2005 8:21:32 PM PDT by cyncooper

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay apologized Wednesday for using overheated rhetoric on the day Terri Schiavo died, but refused to say whether he supports impeachment of the judges who ruled in her case.

~snip~

At a crowded news conference in his Capitol office, DeLay addressed remarks he made in the hours after the brain-damaged Florida woman died on March 31. "I said something in an inartful way and I shouldn't have said it that way and I apologize for saying it that way," DeLay told reporters.

~snip~

DeLay seemed at pains to soften, if slightly, his rhetoric of March 31, when Schiavo died despite an extraordinary political and legal effort to save her life.

"I believe in an independent judiciary. I repeat, of course I believe in an independent judiciary," DeLay said.

At the same time, he added, the Constitution gives Congress power to oversee the courts.

"We set up the courts. We can unset the courts. We have the power of the purse," DeLay said.

Asked whether he favors impeachment for any of the judges in the Schiavo case, he did not answer directly.

Instead, he referred reporters to an earlier request he made to the House Judiciary Committee to look into "judicial activism" and Schiavo's case in particular.

I am not the one making fun of how other people look. Adults do not do that, at least not the ones I know.

Please stop making hurtful insults to people about what they may or may not look like to you. Make fun of their opinions, ideas, thoughts, etc....but leave the personal stuff out of it. It really is hurtful.

It amazes me how the fanatics can be unaware that this case is far from unusual medically or legally. Can they really be ignorant of the fact that any given day hundreds of decisions like this are made and that there may be thousands of cases lying unaware in hospital beds trapped in a gruesome twilight zone between life and death?

You misunderstand. The reason so many people are up in arms is that they didn't realize until Terri's cse came to the spotlight how frequently this is occurring. Eyes have been opened to how far we have already gone down the slippery slope. The "fanatics" are just trying to keep us from going further. There is a culture of death in this country that some of us, many of us, are not at all comfortable with.

More pap.

I'd post a few hundred quotes from the founders to refute your silliness, but I learned long ago that people like you are immune.

You claimed I was trying to decide who was "worthy" of living. Never did.

Let others fight their own battles. You pretend not to know what that was all about? You were on that thread.

I will NOT be told I don't support the military, that I BASH the military since I was born and married into it. When my whole entire life has been spent loving and supporting our military. Twisted lies insulting my character concerning that issue were never retracted.

Furthermore, when someone posts their picture on their homepage, they are fair game...

So now, tell me how I have insulted YOU about your looks, and we can move forward.

Your "fight" has not changed one thing wrt those patients. They still die when intervention is stopped.
And it occurs without the slightest input from me or even my awareness they are dying.

How did I get to be "dangerous" when all this goes on with me having nothing to do about it? If I recognize the reality how does that make me "dangerous" other than to the BS peddlers?

It's so frustrating to have won, then to have guys like Frist not have the grapes to do what should be done.

Every time a Rat says boo, the Republicans jump.

I am so disgusted with what the Republican party has become.

Yes I know you're an expert at the new standard of FR methodolgy for fact finding. Create the facts that validate your "feelings." Ignore or attack all else.

immune?

Reason is usually sufficient inoculation against the poisonous hate excreted by some so called believers of Christ.

I dare you to repost that comment on a Hillary thread. You'd be laughed off the forum..

Apparently you are incapable of understanding anything about this or you would not claim that I am judging the worthiness of a person's life. What I said was that millions were consumed for NOTHING. That meant there was NO positive RESULT from that expenditure. Nothing was added to TS's worth by it. It helped NOTHING.

But it could have saved hundreds of lives had it not been wasted because of this scandelous litigation by the Schindlers. Those lives could have been more productive and useful than that tiny flicker of life still within TS's body. They could have survived to create great inventions, had children or become great leaders had millions not been wasted when it was clear there was no hope for any recovery.

While I don't know much about Felos I am sure he is more truthful and honest than you if your comments are any indication.

I understand very well that some people are extremely ignorant as must be the case if what you say is true. Since only the ignorant could be unaware of this reality.

But it matters not what this case may have revealed since there is NO ALTERNATIVE. Where are the resources to come from to maintain such people in this living hell? They are not there.

One on you side claimed there were 24,000 in TS's situation at any given time. Where is the 24 Billion to come from to keep them hanging on given the much higher priorities facing society?

This is not a question motivated by love of money above all else but a realistic question.

Then the next question is Who would want to be maintained in such a state beyond a minimal amount of time necessary to assertain that recovery will not occur? I know of no one who would ask his family or society to use its resources in such a manner.

Medical care in many cases is like triage at a disaster or battle- those cases with the greatest chance of survival will get the attention those with little will likely die since not enough resources are there to save all. Simply there were many higher priority cases than TS. None of this means that I hate TS, am a "lover of death" or "wanted" her to die or any of the other stupid accusations that have been hurled.

I thought there just had to be more to the story than what was on that thread for one to be so cruel to another about personal matters. I guess not. So okay, she said something to you about military bashing that upset you to no end. Fine, I understand that. I am not defending anything she said that I may or may not agree with. That is not the point. You can defend yourself without resorting to personal attacks on how people look to you.

I don't think just because someone posts their picture that they are fair game. Do you just walk up to people on the street and comment on their looks, I mean, they are out and about so they must be fair game?

You, being one of the usual suspects, should be the last one talking about letting people fight their own battles. I will speak up when I think it is needed.

Perhaps I have more hope than you that the goodness in man would prevail over man's weakness. Maybe we just look at this from different points of view and cannot seem to reconcile our differences. Fair enough, I suppose.

For you to compare what people say about Hillary on this board to the cruel things you have said just shows me that you do not understand the difference between saying something directly to someone and people posting random thoughts about Hillary that she will never see.

It is cruel.

That stupid and weak argument is totally blown away by the fact that the family and friends of Terri have always been willing to bear the entire cost of her care. If anyone 'wasted resources', it was Michael Schiavo.

Try again.

You are constantly making value judgements about the worth of one human life.

Who do you think you're kidding?

There was NOTHING "good" about making TS linger in a living hell for an extra decade. Few things could be more evil.

Look, I am getting weary of these useless verbal exchanges with you. It's a total waste of time on my part. You launch your petty passive aggressive attacks and think you look so righteous? Just the opposiste.

FWIW, I never made fun of her looks...I simply asked if she wore "boxers or briefs", on her motorcycle, LOL.

I have no intention of shutting you up. If you want to self-destruct, that's your business.

Now, let these good people try and discuss the issue without any further flame wars from us. THIS time, I am done. Good day, sw
