House Majority Leader Tom DeLay apologized Wednesday for using overheated rhetoric on the day Terri Schiavo died, but refused to say whether he supports impeachment of the judges who ruled in her case.

At a crowded news conference in his Capitol office, DeLay addressed remarks he made in the hours after the brain-damaged Florida woman died on March 31. "I said something in an inartful way and I shouldn't have said it that way and I apologize for saying it that way," DeLay told reporters.

DeLay seemed at pains to soften, if slightly, his rhetoric of March 31, when Schiavo died despite an extraordinary political and legal effort to save her life.
"I believe in an independent judiciary. I repeat, of course I believe in an independent judiciary," DeLay said.
At the same time, he added, the Constitution gives Congress power to oversee the courts.
"We set up the courts. We can unset the courts. We have the power of the purse," DeLay said.
Asked whether he favors impeachment for any of the judges in the Schiavo case, he did not answer directly.
Instead, he referred reporters to an earlier request he made to the House Judiciary Committee to look into "judicial activism" and Schiavo's case in particular.

You just joined here and you're accusing Trinity of being a DU'er?
I've always found it interesting that people most often accuse others of what they themselves are guilty of.
And your constant refrain that Trinity works for a Hospice couldn't be more wrong, but don't let the facts get in the way of a snotty post. It certainly hasn't stopped you thus far.
LOLOL.
I thought he was leaving?
Never say what you would do unless you've been there, EV. These doctor's don't act on their own. If you live long enough, they will present the case to you and allow you to decide.
The question to you is does your loved one have enough money to keep them hooked up to a respirator in a nursing home for years?
If that's living, give me death.

Beyond - may I suggest you chill a bit?
Reminds me of a joke.
A celebrity went to visit a nursing home for a charity event and was dismayed that no one seemed to recognize him. He started thinking that, perhaps, the old folks were just being polite by not accosting him for autographs and the like. So he went up to one old lady and said, "Do you know who I am?"The lady smiled and instantly the celebrity was reassured that the fame he'd worked so hard for hadn't slipped away. The old lady said, "Don't worry. The nurse can tell you who you are."
I'm delighted to see DeLay apologize for his remarks. And happier still that neither Cheney nor Bush supported his comments.
Terri wasn't on life support.
I'm disgusted that he apologized...utterly.
You are but a very SMALL FISH.
You are even more wrong than you are small.
Delay did not apologize for his remarks, just the artful way he said them. Bush supported keeping Terri alive. Took the dramatic step of coming back to the Whitehouse to sign the bill. I would say we have a pro-life President, just like this board.
Unfortunately, I can jump on an airplane and sign a piece of paper, too...with the same result.
Afraid the President has more clout than that. Nope...not getting away from the fact that an innocent handicapped woman was offed as the President and his brother watched.
He did not apologize for his remarks. He apologized for the way he artfully said them :) Rest assured, Delay is on our side.
Amazing how the Dems never apologize, though, isn't it? And they're always SHOCKED, SHOCKED by Republicans.
Delay shouldn't have apologize for anything...words, meaning, they way they were delivered or intent.
Neither the president nor the vice president supported DeLay's over the top comments about judges. It couldn't be more clear.
I agree with everything you said. I think Delay will say more in the next few days.
Which over the top comments? Delay was right.
Either way, the President was for keeping Terri alive and so was Delay. That is the bottom line.
I know you do... ;-)
Beyond - I see that a previous comment of yours has been deleted. Try to reel it in a bit. Ella has not said anything that deserves that kind of tone.
